I have a question regarding the rear shocks on the '69 and '70 convertibles.
Can someone tell me the correct way to get to the top mounting bolts? Is it through the trunk or via removal of the rear seat? Is there a rear panel to be removed like the early Mustangs?
Does the well liner need to come out as well?
I’m doing the job next week and a bit of prior knowledge might keep me out of trouble.
Any info would be appreciated.
And that’s it, easy to access from there with a proper ratchet extension.
If you are not familiar with this task, here is what I do:
I freeze the shocks from the underside to prevent them from turning with the nut & same when I install the new ones.
I cut the nylon band while holding the shock inserted in the upper hole and aligned ready to extend in the bottom hole. I find it easier this way rather than recompressing it when the nylon band is cut in advance.
Are you installing KYB, and if so which ones? I initially installed the 343219 and then replaced them with 344052 and my car behaves much better since then on bad roads.
Travel of 344052 is better centered for Cougar. 343219 better fits Mustang. There is a full discussion about that in this section, browse the older subjects you will find interesting readings.
I pulled the rear shocks out last night. They have been there for at least 30 years and were almost welded to the attachment nuts.
The “C clamp” trick on the upper and lower body (to stop them turning) worked like a charm.
After that my 3/4" impact gun made short work of the lower mounting nuts.
I think that the coupe’s upper attachment points are accessable through the trunk, as they are on the 1970 Mustang.
Convertibles are a bit different in their rear section construction.
