1969 Cougar door panel removal(best tool for panel fasteners?)

Anyone have suggestions for the best type of fastener removal tool and brand to use to get the door panel off the door of 1969 Cougar? Suggestions greatly appreciated.

There are multiple variations of this tool. You can get one off the various tool trucks, Snap-On, Mac, Matco, etc. They used to be available through the Help section in many auto parts stores, I have seen them at Harbor Freight. I have one that has a spring loaded squeeze handle. This style seems to put less pressure on the door panel backer board.

Who makes and model number of the one you have that is spring loaded? I just don’t want to put any stress the backer board. Some work better than others but just wanted to make sure I get the best one. I just ordered a new latch. Thank You

The spring loaded one that I have works on the same principle as the Lisle one pictured above. Mine is a bit different though. I will have to take a look at it later today to see if there are any markings on it as to the manufacturer and/or part number.

I have one of the multi-piece trim tool kits from Amazon, typical “alphabet soup” seller name. It’s good quality, works well on classic and modern cars, and is good value for the money.

That’s the one I have too. Been happy with it.

The one that I have is a Blue Point, a brand sold by Snap-On. It is model #YA331.

Thank You.

This is the one I have. Used it for years. I believe they supplied Snap on, Mac, etc….

The one that 70scj4spvert posted a link to looks exactly like my Blue Point tool.

I wonder if Ford had a factory tool to remove the panels back then. It appears that most of these removal tools are pullers only but compressing the spring fastener along with a pull would work best I think. I have one tool that you can squeeze the spring fastener but it seems too thick to slide behind the panel. I take my time and do everything not to do any damage when making a repair.
