1969 Cougar Wiring help

Ok i’m new to this website and somewhat new to cougars and i will have a lot of questions. I am in the process of restoring my dads 69 cougar with a 351w auto. I need some help with the wiring as i cant find hardly any wiring help. I need basically a clear diagram/pictures of right now the stereo system wiring and color codes and what the colors are as well as a tail light wiring diagram. mainly in need of the stereo diagram because i am having a hard time trying to find out the plugs and stuff because my dad years ago replaced the original with another radio and did not wire it. the car has the factory plugs and all but i dont know what goes where. Thanks.

Welcome to our forum. I found the electrical schematics that I use for my 69 at WCCC which is westcoastclassiccougars.com. Good luck.

How do you download it?

When I got my 68 there was a lot of chopped wiring under the dash. Knowing there are no Cougar specific wiring kits I had an auto electric shop cleanup the under dash wiring. I had them add a mini fuse block too. Something you must do to get the stereo off the weak factory glass fuse block. do this before you start adding lots of electrical components that can lead to an electrical fire. Additionally, get a larger amp alternator, something about 130 amps would do. I had one built but you can get a 130 amp one-wire alternators from Summit Racing.

I recently had my 67 XR7 rewired. I used a Ron Francis 8 circuit set. This has a mounting clip for additional fee. You can place the block just above your left foot on the driver side floor. The kit came with GM headlight connectors so we had to get some longer wiring to make them reach on the Cougar. If the 8 circuit is not enough you may have to look around for a mini block and do the wiring up yourself or have a shop do it. Not cheap! The more power draw, the greater the need for circuits and relays.

Order a service manual set. it will have all the wiring schematics in it for the various systems.

I have both standard and XR7 wiring diagrams in PDF form. If you send me your email in PM, I can send whichever you need. These PDF’s are probably not everything that is available but the basic wiring information is there.

Regards,

Robert

Hi, You should obtain a copy of these diagrams. They are the original as printed by Ford and are better than the 8 1/2 x 11 book that has been reprinted. That’s just my personal opinion. I have seen these cheaper, about $10 or so on eBay.

ATM i am still in school so i do not have a lot of money to do much but im gonna do as much as possible right now. If yall would like to see it id be happy to post some pictures.
Also the wiring is all in good order and in place i just dont know what goes to what and i would like to learn

Welcome this the forum and Cougar family. You will find lots of good help here. We all love to see pictures of other Cougars. Please do share and where are you from? Might be someone on the forum near you!

Welcome. If anyone can point you in the right direction, these guys can. Within a few days of joining last year had many an electrical question on my cat answered. Probably the best forum I’ve been on as far as cool knowledgeable guys willing to impart their knowledge on those of us less experienced with this particular car.

Im from North Carolina. im trying to post pictures but it says my files are to large
