Good Evening ! I’m sure other Cougar restorers have found which type of Ford NOS moulding clip is the correct one to use.
I have a 1969 Cougar XR-7 ( Nov. 13, 1968 San Jose assembly ) and am looking to use the correct NOS clips to re-install the stainless mouldings ( front and back ). It would appear that the 1972 Ford / L-M MPC specifies D1AZ-6542413-B. Going back further into older MPC’s it would seem the original p/n was C8AZ-6342413-A, r/b D1AZ-6542413-A then again r/b the “B” suffix. Are all these clips functionally the same ? Maybe only differing in the type of anti-corrosion finish ?
I’m also aware that using the original style Ford clips and a reproduction ( rear ) rubber seal causes a ‘fitment’ issue. I’m also aware that a Mopar ( very nearly the same as a Ford ) clip is slightly ‘taller’ and helps to eliminate the problem with the thicker repro. seal. But I’m using my original ( not rotted or dried out ! ) seal so I’m after the correct NOS clips.
Thanks for helping me with this ‘picky’ detail, but you know how it is - planning ahead helps to avoid problems during re-assembly !
I am not much help but I would like to know which mopar ones work for the rear. I have been avoiding putting my trim back on since I’ve heard it sucks with the ford repro clips and rubber
Hi DieselD : I searched for 1/2 an hour looking for the original post / thread regarding the ‘too thick’ rear window gasket ( 1969 / 1970 ) and the Mopar clip reference, to no avail ( the search engine here isn’t that discriminating or selective ). So I went to WCCC and found a reference there ( not to the Mopar clip but to another # ) Here’s the reference on that web-page :

Here are some useful tips on installing this seal made by DCMR.
From KTL Restorations; Our cure for installing this less than perfect fitting reproduction is to use the longer trim clips (black ones). The clips Ford used were red oxide and the reproduction clips are green. The black clips extend up about 3/32 of an inch further, this should be enough to grab the trim. Also, not all of the clip posts were in the same location as far as some being higher or lower which would puts the clip closer to the pinch-weld or near the body line. Sometimes he has to use a combination of clips is needed to complete the job. You have to be careful not to get the clips too high or the trim will be loose.
From Cascade Classics; My trick is I put the seal on the body of the car first and then work the glass in. It is a pain in the a%# but it works. The clips I use are #387. Ford part number D1AB-6545413-AB or C5ZZ-6542413-B. I have never had a problem with them.
From Jeff B, President on the Cascade Cougar Club; I use a dremel tool to bring the height of the rubber seal down as the only reproduction made (by DCMR) sits up a little too high.
The clip # 387 seems to be a WE # ( Wurth ? ) and I found it here : http://www.arendsspecialty.com/search.aspx?q=we+387
Maybe some other CCC members can find the original Mopar substitute number for the molding clip ?
I also think the Ford clip number referenced in the WCCC web-page uses the Engineering # ( D1AB-6545413-AB ) which should be the p/n D1AZ-6542413-B .
Best of luck
