I just recently purchased a '69 Cougar and the front grille including the headlight doors are all black. I notice in the many online photos of other '69s that there are grilles with varying levels of chrome showing in the front grille area.
Is this due to differing option packages, etc?
you should get a marti report, it will tell you everything you want to know about how your car was produced.
is instrument cluster black or wood grain? if black you might want to check if you have an eliminator.
Thank you for the reply.
My question isn’t so much as to how it pertains to my personal car as much as I’m wondering which cars came with the chrome accented grilles while others appear to come with a black grille. Some have chrome accents across the entire grille, some just in the center, and others are all black.
Most were Chrome with the edges of the bars being Black. Eliminators were Black with Chrome for the center sections and the top and bottom bars. Or at least that is what I remember them being. A lot of people have done there own theme with Blacking out the grill in different ways.
Thank you for the responses.
Ok, so I’m starting to think the prior owner that restored the car just simply blacked out the entire grille.
Yes, many people do that, especially if the chrome on the grille is not in good shape. Paint is much cheaper than trying to get the grille re-chromed. Your best bet is to remove the paint on the edges and turn it into an Eliminator style grille, and hope that the chrome around the edges is still in good condition under that black paint. Good luck.
And spring for a new Cougar emblem on the right headlight. That baby should be chromed around the cat!
