1969 Tilt Away steering release valve staying engaged killing battery

My tilt away steering stopped working and the release valve seems to stay energized and drains the battery to a point of not enough energy to crank in about 12 hours. If you remove the positive battery cable from battery and then touch the batteries positive side with cable terminal the release valve mechanism clicks every time. I had to disconnect the connector to the release valve and no more battery drainage and no more clicking. I suppose the tilt away relay is staying engaged, what does anyone else think? I did not think a relay would lock in the closed circuit position. If it is the relay alone can the relay be repaired or rebuilt? Appreciate any help

More likely the door switch is bad or out of adjustment.

It is a much safer process to remove the negative battery terminal if you need to disconnect the battery. Why? If you slip on the positive side with a metal wrench, you can end up shorting to the chassis and causing a welding event, as well as burning your hand!

I have a new door switch

I would test it with a meter.

I think its more like the wrong switch. The one that someone installed before I purchased the car is the shorter nipple type like used on earlier cars. I ordered the one with the longer rounded nipple. like shown, should have it by Saturday.
