1969 xr7 AM/FM radio

Hello,

I am searching for a 1969 XR-7 AM-FM Stereo radio for my car.

Thanks

There is such a thing. Mercury offered an AM / FM stereo radio in 1969. It was pretty low powered, around 15 watts per channel. They were not popular and they don’t work very well. You might consider having one of the newer options done to an original AM radio.

Put a search alert on eBay for the part number. It’s common to Mustangs so they come up fairly often. They used to be really high $$, but no reserve auctions have been ending substantially lower over the last year.

It can cost $500-$600 to redo one. If the face plate is broken, you will have a hard time finding a replacement. It pays to buy a nicer core than a cheap one that’s expensive to fix.

I actually think they sound good when paired with the proper ohm speakers from Electro-Tek. I don’t think they sold well originally because they were so expensive. That’s just my opinion. I wasn’t even born yet!

The AM/FM radios were not a big seller back in the 1960s because FM radio was still in its infancy. If you did not live near a large city there was a good chance that there would not be any FM stations in your area to even pick up on the radio. By the mid to late 1970s there were a lot more FM stations to choose from so the AM/FM radio became more common in vehicles.

I’m not sure of the price for 1969. But my 70 XR-7 got one and it was $212.50 retail in the fall of 1969. That is a lot of money for the day.

Hello. I have a 70 AM/FM Stereo Radio available. This unit has The “Cougar” script face plate and technically would not be correct for 1969… but it will mount in the dash correctly.
The radio should be considered a non working core that would need the internals rebuilt and upgraded. If interested, you are welcome to send a P-M. Thanks.

I bought mine for $970 off Ebay a couple months ago, its was dated 1969 and the same as the one below listed on Ebay except the one in the link is dated 1968. I have a picture of two radio options from 69 owner’s manual. My car was ordered with the AM Stereo 8 Track. I still have the original radio which the 8 track still works and radio as well. I opened the original radio up and it looks to never ever had caps replaced(that is amazing).
