1969 XR7 Cowl and Door Top Trim Removal

How do you remove the bright trim on the back of the cowl/base of the windshield and the tops of the doors?

For the lower windshield moulding first remove both wiper arms. Then you will need to remove the cowl panel, open the hood and there are screws along the front edge of the cowl panel. There are also screws that go down in the middle of the rubber hood bumpers that will also need to be removed. You will need to disconnect the windshield washer hoses. Now you can remove the cowl panel. It will be a bit tight if the hood is still on the car but it can be done. With the cowl panel off you will see the clips that hold the chrome moulding to the car. Remove the screws or bolts that hold those clips. Then you will need to open each door and look at the end of the moulding. There will be a single screw holding each end to the bottom of the windshield post. With all the clips unscrewed the moulding is now ready to remove.

The moulding on the top of the doors is held in place by a row of screws going through the beltline fuzzy material. You will see little cutouts in the fuzzy material where the screws are. First remove the interior door panel. You will most likely need to either remove the door glass or have it drop down to the bottom of the door to gain access to most of the screws. Just rolling the window down as far as it normally goes will have some of the glass still covering the screws. Perhaps if you have a flexable screwdriver or a right angle driver you might be able to get at all the covered screws without dropping or removing the glass, maybe. Just an FYI, on the drivers door there will be a short section of the beltline material that extends the length of the outside mirror, there will be a screw or two in that section as well.

Remove the rubber stop at the bottom of the door. This will allow the glass to be lowered to access the W/x screws.

Where exactly is the rubber stop located in the door

When you get the door panel off you can see in the bottom of door a rubber stop that can be removed to let window down enough.

Does it matter if it has power windows? I’ve got it apart and see no rubber stop.

Center of door. Bottom. There is a sheet metal bracket welded to the “innerds”.
It has a slot in it for the rubber stop. The door glass hits at center. (some have a "reinforced channel glued to the glass)

If yours is missing be sure to get the same height as you have in the other door .

I have seen over 6 different heights…

Don’t see anything in the center. Reinforced channel? Only thing that bolts at the bottom are window guides. The window rides up and down the two rods. One toward the front of the door and one toward the back. I’ll try to get some pics.

At this point I should probably look into removing the glass. How is the best way to do that?

The bracket is part of the door after everything has been removed.

Top door is a 70 & the bottom one is a 68.

Hope this helps!

Removing the glass is not very easy. If the w/x removal is the only reason you have, don’t remove glass…

I’m taking the car in for paintwork and the trim piece on the top of the door needs to come off so there’s no paint lines.
