I was looking over the gauge cluster that was supposedly from my 1970 428cj Eliminator and the one i have has a 60 shouldn’t it have the 80 tachometer?
A 6,000 rpm tachometer is typical for a non BOSS 302 Eliminator.
Sounds correct. As Dave said only the Boss 2’s got the 8000 RPM tachs the rest of the engines got 6000.
There were a few cats that got the 8K tach and they did not have Boss 302. Ive heard other say the same. I got one out of a 351 Windsor? it was a 4 speed XR-7. Recall some mention of Calif built cars getting them due to shortage of the 6K ?
I still have that tach BTW
My Eliminator has an 8000 rpm tach. 351 4V 4 speed.
Might be because it was at the end of the line for 1970. 8th or 9th from the last produced.
Don’t think it has been changed.
I had a 70 351W powered XR-7 that had a 8K tach in it. It was a midyear build. I had that Cougar at a So-Cal Cougar club show back in 2002. I cannot prove it left the factory with it. If I still had the car, I could remove the interment cluster to check the date on the tach.
Hence my response of “typical”. The only 1969 or 1970 Cougar that was specified to receive a tachometer of 8,000 rpms was when equipped with a BOSS 302. All other were supposed to receive a tachometer of 6,000 rpms. I have seen B2’s with a 6K tach, and non B2 Eliminators and XR7’s with an 8K tach.
I would add that more often than not, they are found in 1970 XR7’s, instead of 1969 XR7’s.
The replacement 3-wire tach I got from Rocketman is an 8K version. 1969 XR 7. 351W, originally 2V.
As stated 6K tach is what is specified from the factory for all but the BOSS 302 cars and would be considered correct in a judged situation. The 6K in a B2 might have been a factory mistake or a replacement. The 8K in a non BOSS 302 late in the 1970 model year might have been a decision to utilize excess inventory at the assembly plant depending on how many were ordered in the original order. The other possibility is a replacement after manufacture, but IMHO should not be considered correct in a judged situation. Rocketman will sell you a 6K or an 8K replacement. I believe that he only has 8K available for upgrading a non factory cluster to upgrade to include a tach.
