1970 cougar rear bumper

Trying to figure out we’re the bronze colored dished washers go from the bolt kit for installing a 1970 rear bumper thanks for any info Dan

I think the washers you are referring to are the ones between the bumper and the bumper bracket ? They are ‘wave’ washers, designed to spread out the compression force of the nut behind the bracket and the bumper bolt-cap on top of the outer bumper surface. This is to prevent any distortion or deformation of the chrome on the bumper. Here is an image from the MPC showing the set-up for the bumper ( 1969 / 70 ):

Yes I know about the wave washers (don’t tighten to much lol ) the ones I’m referring to are a bronze color and are dished the kit is for mounting the bumper once the brackets are already on this kit has 4 shims 4 bolts and 4 of the dished washer I wish I new how to send a picture above my knowledge west coast sells these bumper kits thanks for your help

Hi Dannyf : This must be the kit from WCCC:

I would suspect the bronze washers are used in the trunk, between the bolt head and the sheet metal. I know that those bolts already have a ‘captured’ washer on them, but I also found a set of those larger washers in my Cougar ( San Jose assembly ) when I removed the bumper. The shims are probably used between the mounting bracket and the exterior sheet metal - to allow for adjustment ( adding clearance between the bumper and the taillight assemblies and rear backup lights / 1/4 panel extensions.
Best to confirm the application of the bronze washers and shims with WCCC.

The bronze colored washers hold the rubber seals inside the trunk.

Here’s an image of the ‘set-up’ for a '69 Mustang / Shelby - should be the same as a Cougar.

So the arrangement on the photo corroborates what Royce is saying - the larger ‘bronze’ washer hold the large rubber seals up against the inside sheet metal of the trunk. The only thing I see in the image that isn’t correct is the placement of the shims - they would be on the outside of the trunk - between the sheet metal and the bracket itself.

I got this image ( + a discussion ) of the parts involved in the attachment of the bumper from '69Stang.com:
