Previous owner has a typical old school aftermarket steering wheel in place, a little light of 14”. Thinking the OEM was a 15” wheel I’d sure like to have the extra inch so I can see the “sweet spot” of my speedometer. Not deserving, or willing, to pay $700 for a steering wheel, has anybody found a reasonable solution that “fits”? The turn signal lever is a joke too (about 3” long) but I’m sure I can make my own pretty easy without regard to “period correct”. What have you got?
Find a 70 and wrap it with a leather steering wheel “kit”.
Just not one of them fuzzy things! ![]()
Detail center yourself, and they make 2 different length blinker arms….
That’s an idea I hadn’t thought of, and trust me, with my grungy paws “fuzzy” would NOT work! The two different levers would be with or without speed control? Or something else.
Both are no cruise.
You can buy a new signal arm lever from NPD for about $12. I’m pretty sure you can add another $288 in parts to the order sooo easily if you dare!
Shipping is free to you, anywhere in the US if the order is over $300. Their site even has the Cougar catalogue online and don’t forget so many “utility” parts cross with the Mustangs of the same year. They also have a huge online catalogue for them as well.
I have ordered 95% of my parts from them starting out in 2004 when I bought my 72 Mach1 Q code car when I got back into the hobby with several cars coming and going over the years up to and including my 1965 427 SC Cobra and my 70 Eliminator.
Personally, I have had nothing but great success dealing with them and I LOVE the fact that they rarely, if ever, dont have the part you want, in stock. They’re a great source of parts including shit you didn’t or may not have even know was suppose to be on your Cougar because so many Cougars have been stripped over the years of key stuff or a piece that broke and wasn’t replaced, that back then deemed not necessary and now you can’t find it.
Anyways worth a look.

Thanks Larry. Didn’t realize the free shipping over $300; good to know (I think). Are you in Florida? I saw the turn signal lever on their website and it’s cheaper to buy it there than have it shipped from WCCC (understandably). It’s a relatively short drive for me (Citrus County), so I have already dropped a fair share of my coinage there. I plan on going there tomorrow to pick up the lever at least.
You’re welcome!
Absolutely nothing against WCCC either. The problem is the size difference of the two businesses. NPD can afford to ship free. You should honesty make a list up tonight, go in and pick it all up at once.
I live in Canada, so for us owners up here, we get screwed on exchange. We often ship to a border crossing and go pick it up to save some money, but I’m forced to have it sent to my home via UPS Priority and then have to deal with those costs. So for me, every US dollar spent we roughly add 40% to it. Ugh. Having said that, IF I place an order on Monday. It arrives by Wednesday or Thursday from the NPD Michigan depot. Tough to beat.
Wow! My scenario is definitely more accommodating; about 1/2 hour drive. After our discussion I took a look at another item I hadn’t considered from them - a Scott Drake export brace. I will be adding it to the list for tomorrow!
Please, tell me more about two different lengths of turn signal levers. Not sure if that will help with my issue or not, but may be worth a try. I believe that I have an original metal lever, the length is good but it’s too heavy for the return spring or centering detent. I can come out of a right turn and the left turn signal will switch on, since the lever dropped through when the right turn signal cancelled. Are there lighter levers or am I back into the turn signal switch for replacement?
Following: I didn’t want to ask another question, but I’d like to know that answer!
On our 67 with a custom made wheel , I just unscrewed the turn signal.stalk and put it in the lathe…cut and rethread to suit
I wonder if I run the lathe backward can I extend the stalk? ![]()
Well good for me! I went and picked up my export brace, robertshaw thermostat, new revised restrictor…….and totally forgot my turn signal lever!
70XR7Tom,
Your problem is more likely to be the turn signal switch.
I believe that I have only ever seen one length of turn signal stalk. I can see a 1967-1969 with cruise control to have a slightly longer stalk but only because of the cruise control part. If there are actually two different lengths of stalk I would like to know the difference and why there are two.

Here is a “shorter one at 5 1/2” long
Not sure on how long other are….
I was wondering if that was what you were referring to. Aftermarket replacement for smaller diameter steering wheel substitutions. I think that must be what’s on mine, but it’s inconveniently short.
Do any of the aftermarket steering wheels for 1970-73 Fords even have the provision for the locking steering wheel? There are a series of holes in a metal plate, on the back of those steering wheels.
Yes. I have one on mine, but unfortunately I don’t see any identification on it for manufacturer. It is a 3 spoke 13 1/2” chrome center black foam rim with center horn. When I bought the car the horn didn’t work; the PO had taken the wire off because he couldn’t get it to stop (continuous honk). It was just a finesse thing to get it operational. Works fine, but I would prefer larger to visualize more of my instrument cluster.
So the shorter one was never something that was available from the factory. Which means that there is only one length that would be factory correct.
