I was going to try to re wire my 1970 cougar Xr7 convert. Can I use a 1970 mustang wiring harness(s) etc? Have anyone done this project on their own? Any tips?
It will be a disaster unless you are an electronics expert. The best course is to get your original harness rebuilt. It will work.
What about just re wiring the entire car? The original wiring is approx 50 years old
Unless you have brittle cracked insulation (like on engine harnesses subjected to high heat), there is not likely anything wrong with your existing wiring aside from hacks and poor connections at the terminations. This can all be fixed.
The Cougar in particular uses a different wiring architecture that really doesn’t match up with the aftermarket kits. This is doubly true for XR7. Mustang is just similar enough that you can hook up enough wires to start a pretty good fire. Your car will forever be molested to anyone that thinks of buying it. There will no longer be anyone that can help trouble shoot the electrical. If you want to build a hot rod then of course knock yourself out but remember you are now the engineer. If you don’t know how to make flawless connections as you replace the hundreds of connectors you will be chasing problems forever. We have seen it here dozens of times and it usually ends up in tears.
