Not currently set up as an XR7 with the blacked out front grill/rear tailights, cougar emblems on the front grill/gas cap, & no clock, etc - but the Marti Report could clear that up as the changes to the emblems, etc was noted. Looks like they were heading towards an Eliminator clone
Yes, it is an original XR7, but the only outward markings of that remaining on the car are the door panels. Not surprisingly, when I purchased the car, the clock did not work. Instead of having it repaired, or upgrading to an electronic conversion for over $100, only to have it duplicated by a clock display in the new stereo, I decided to just delete the whole clock. I purchased a plain dash plate for over the glove box, along with a non-burlwood gauge surround so that they would match. (I still have the burlwood gauge facia).
As stated in the ad, I replaced both front and rear XR7 emblems with the “Walking Cat”, added a rear spoiler, and hood scoop with hood stripe to finish it off. The side Eliminator side stripes were not available for a convertible at that time, so they were not added.
The changes to the car were a personal choice to get it closer to my vision for the vehicle.
I do not have a Marti Report for the car, but I am sure that a VIN number check will validate the car as an XR7.
Something I think everyone might know is on both 69 and 70 convertibles XR7 the chrome trim on the side runs down to the door, that’s what i see in your pic and that’s what I have on both of mine, really nice car you have. ’
You built a nice looking Cougar, if you post the first 5 characters of the VIN it will prove it is a XR-7 It should start like this "0F94(M or H) then the sequential unit number that you don’t need to revival.
Just an FYi, the walking cat on a black background on the gas door is a 1970 Eliminator only part. All other Cougars, standard and XR-7, had the Mercury crest on the gas door. For the 69-70 XR-7 there would have been an XR-7 emblem glued onto the right side of the decklid. That emblem often gets lost when I car gets repainted.
I had the pleasure of meeting Mike when he was earlier along into his build process of this Convertible. Nice guy. And a sharp looking Cat.
Engine compartment has tight fender aprons & shock tower spot welds. Underside pan could look the same? DSO 52 or DSO 53?.. Gotta hunch anyway.
