I am starting to rebuild the rear end. First time doing this. I think I have a 9” rear end bc it’s my understanding that it was standard in the 1970 cougar with the small block 351. How do you confirm? My rear end seems to be leaking from the front seal (not to sure the name) and/or possible main seal. Does any one have any suggestions/recommendations on 3rd member rebuild kits?
If a deep socket will not fit on the lower two bolts on the pumpkin, its a 9".
Thanks for the reference materials. Those two bolts in the 6 and 7 o’clock position can only be accessed with a wrench, makes it a 9”. I will look at mine tomorrow and confirm. Thank you. Any idea what to expect of I take off the 3rd member choosing to access the gasket behind it to change it? Also what should I expect taking off the the 3rd member/yoke bearing?
Ive only swapped entire pumpkins that have already been rebuilt…fairly awkward and heavy.
Others will have to answer regarding pinion seal swap.
Im sure there’s plenty online regarding 9" rebuilds.
I believe all 70’s got the 9” rear end. I replaced the pinion seal on mine, but it still drips. It’s only a drip or so per month, so I haven’t done anything more. I’ve read the welds tend to leak, and suspect that might be my problem.
Send the pumpkin to Ford 8 and 9 Inch for rebuild. They have shipping crates and do best job. Done about 5 for me.
Agree with Rick, Alan does excellent work.

My old 64 galaxie leaked horribly from the pinion seal . By freeing up the vent the mud daubers make a nest in it never leaked again . Check your vents
