1970 Headlight Door Grille (Trim Black Painting)

I got my grilles re-chromed thru WCCC. Now I’m painting them with Sem Trim Black Spray paint. The black paint is not holding up. Flaking Off. I degreased the chrome but didn’t rough it up. No primer required for this paint. Where did I screw this up at??? I need some help with some good successes out there. Thanks. Gene

Following - I’d like to know the same thing before I start painting mine with the same paint.

I have done several grills over the years 67, 68 & 70 using SEM Trim Black. I washed my parts in Dawn dish soap never used any degreaser. Not one flake of paint has flaked of. Might be the degreaser. I also did not use any primer.

Thanks for the reply. I haven’t heard of using Dawn Dish soap, but I will give it a try. I appreciate the input.

What about using self-etching primer?

Any pre-sanding?

I’m pretty sure if you want paint to stick to chrome you need to lightly sand it first.

When tearing down the 1970 headlight covers, are you able to remove the black sheet metal pieces from behind the actual “grill bars” or is that overkill? I see Don Rush has the service for $1000. Might be money well spent.

Yes I have removed the panels. Cut off the rivets and than drill and tap 1/4 20 screws.

Good question. Is the original poster trying to paint over chrome, or is it the bare metal in the gaps? I used paint reducer to super clean the surface between the chromed raised bars and cheap flat black spray held beautifully.

No, Knight, I was more interested in knowing if I should pull the black rectangular pieces off from behind the grill doors or just prep and repaint with them on and just clean and sand well between the chrome grill bars

Sorry, my 69 backing panels were held on by retaining nuts, so I didn’t understand your problem. cougarrand has experience with the 70 grilles, so he’s the expert.

Hey, Knight,
I wish it was that easy. On the 1970 it appears that there are multiple “studs” on the backside of the grill work. These then go into black sheet metal and then held with a spot weld

So with the pieces all apart, does everything get “Black Satin”?

SEM Trim Black works best.

Should I coat the finished SEM painted pieces with a satin clear?

Not needed.
