1970 headlight doors

looking for some advice on my 1970 xr7,my headlight doors are always in the open position(engine not running)is this normal?there are two coil springs that keep the headlight doors open,all the cougars I have seen have the doors closed unless the headlight switch is on,any help appreciated

The doors are vacuum operated and in the absence of vacuum, they default to open. You have a vacuum leak somewhere, vacuum actuator, tank, switch or hoses.

Also check that the manual override switch is not in the open position.
