1970 Kick Panel speaker pods

Has anyone used these with success? Ive searched the forums and haven’t been able to find anything. Im installing a new radio, need some tunes up front and these seemed like the best way to go. The only issue I see with them by the pics is the speaker pod area hangs really low and looks like it would hit the floor board (compared to the flat stock panels.
Maybe its just my imagination, but i would love to hear from someone who is using or have used these before. Im also wondering how far they would stick out with speakers in them. I have a pair of pretty thin Sound Ordnance speakers that I would like to use.

Also interested. My concern is interference with my shifting leg. If I’m not mistaken, these are a WCCC offering. Sometimes there’s reviews.

Good luck with those,
I bought a pair of the convertable vesions but no one does a slim speaker to use with them, so a dead end for me :wall:

I think it would much easier to go with door speakers like the XR 7. Bluestuff, good to hear there is a Kiwi member here. My father was from NZ and raced motorcycles in the 50’s. Said my birth killed his racing career! Drop me a line. He was from Christchurch.

I did end up going with door speakers,
but even those were slim and not the best sounds …

As much as I hate to cut into my original non-speaker decor door panels, I think I’m gonna go with door speakers over kick panel pods. Does anyone know the maximum depth?

WCCC only sells Kenwood KFC-4675C, which show a mounting depth of 1-5/8" - but their power rating is too low. I’m looking at a pair of Kicker 47KSC4604, with a mounting depth listed at 1-7/8". Anyone know if that extra 1/4" a dealbreaker?

Only if you want to roll your front windows down all the way.

If that is the case why not just create a 1/4" spacer for the speaker and grill?

On a Mustang 7123 forum, a member found an ingenious and unique way to mount speakers without seriously damaging the door panels. Might be worth a look.

My brother has a stock restored 66 mustang convertible and he rigged up a setup using pc speakers… he hung a couple of the small speakers out of sight under the dash and the woofer just sits on the back floor behind the driver seat. He just Bluetooths the audio from his phone. Best part is it not really permanently installed in the car, just a power lead. Please don’t cut up those nice door panels… the speakers are so small they will never sound that great anyway!

Don’t ruin $1000 in door panels for $100 in sound. The kick panels will sound better anyway.

I don’t see the big deal with leaving the door panels uncut. If they are cut in the factory location and the factory speaker grills are used, it will be fine. I can’t think of anyone who wouldn’t buy a car because it had factory appearing speakers in the door panels. The only time it would be an issue is if the car was parted out and someone was looking for uncut panels to do a concours restoration of an AM equipped Cougar or of this car in the way it was delivered from the factory.

The speaker kick panel pods stick out too far for people with long legs, particularly on standard transmission cars, and make the interior appear more modified than it would by using the factory speaker locations.
