1970 Mercury Cougar Houndstooth Hardtop Same Owner since 1972

For sale - 1970 Mercury Cougar Standard Houndstooth Hardtop, VIN # 0F91H571307, white paint, white vinyl top, black and white decore houndstooth interior. One of the very last 1970 Cougars made, built during the last week of production. This is a unique and special car, only 2 owners since new.

This Cougar was sold new in Toledo Ohio, but was immediately driven to Arizona. It was bought the current family in 1972 from Sunland Lincoln-Mercury as a recent “trade in”. Same owner since 1972 (owned 54 years). Only 62,300 documented Box A title original miles, garage kept the entire time. Last registered in 2002.

The family recently spent $8000+ having everything refreshed to be a reliable and safe driving car again. It was a joy to give a 90 year old man a ride again in his original Cougar before he passed away. This Cougar is now 100% turn key ready to drive. The 351C engine starts first time every time, and runs amazing – no noises, rattles, smoke, etc. Honestly this is the best driving 1970 I have ever seen. It has the original exhaust system, original C7AF starter solenoid, original air cleaner, snorkel, heat riser, AC system, D0DB battery hold down, fan, shroud, etc.

The panel alignment is amazing – doors close awesome, window alignment is perfect. Everything works – tilt, headlight grilles, gauges, sequential signals, etc. Interior is in excellent condition. Vinyl top like new. The paint is 9 out of 10, please note that the car was repainted once in the original color, and they did an excellent job. The trim is also very nice.

Items addressed during the recent refresh include: Marti Report, New VIN # door decal (original one was painted over), New Autolite Distributor cap, plugs, wires, radiator cap, Marti reproduction Upper and Lower Radiator hoses, Marti reproduction belts for AC, PS, alternator, new vertical weatherstrips, B pillar quarter window seals, shifter seal and shifter bushings, roof rail w/s, 1970 gas tank, filler neck rubber, restored fuel sender, rubber fuel lines, fuel pump, wiper blades, sway bar end links, rear view mirror glass, new Group 24F battery, new Marti battery cables, and new spring perches.

The original 24 inch radiator was restored, as was the OE Ford 351C water pump. New Marti reproduction heater hoses, also a new hot water shutoff valve. New correct 351C only style thermostat. All fluids were changed, oil, radiator, brake, new air filter, fuel filter, etc.

New brake caliper rubber isolators x4, new disc brake hoses LH and RH, original Bendix brake Booster was rebuilt. New white wall tires x4 (P205-75-14), and the Autolite 2 barrel Carburetor was rebuilt. A car cover is included.

Items that still need work include: AM radio is not functional, just plays static from the speaker. Horns not working as the rim blow switch is too hard to push. AC is not functional, it needs a R12 charge. Compressor does engage, and all under dash switching and fan is working. Has a few small leaks, oil and trans fluid (after 1-2 weeks - small spot). Rear bumper has a few scratches. If the new owner would like any or all these items addressed, we can fix them prior to shipping for cost of parts plus labor.

Zero rust, zero damage on the car that I can see. The bottom side is nice, could use cleaning. Would be a great candidate for dry ice blasting. Will post more photos soon. Seriously, this is a amazing Cougar and will make the new owner very happy. Test drives welcomed.

Asking price is $22K. Thanks, Scott

LOVE those seats!!! Very pretty car. Dig the whitewalls as well.

Scott,

I recently finished scrapping this Hounds Tooth Cougar out. I wish it had been close to as nice as the one you are selling. It was a little higher VIN and built on July 7th,1970.

Very cool - very late houndstooth car. I thought they stopped making cars on July 4th, but yours is later.

Just went by Streetside (Classic car consignment seller) here in Mesa AZ. Believe it or not, they have a very similar car to this in their warehouse for sale. It is also a 1970 White car, with black and white houndstooth interior and houndstooth roof. It is an XR7. Very disappointed with that Streetside car. Shows 129K miles, but nothing was ever properly restored on the car. All weatherstrip on the car is bad or missing, trim is poor, dash pad is junk, everything under the hood is completely wrong, etc. Half the quality of car compared to this one, at twice the asking price. Working to get this low mile orignal on bring a trailer soon, as there are too many flaky people on facebood.

Last chance, as I am in final stages of listing it on bring a trailer. $20K takes it. Amazingly original car, has original exhaust, hood pad, trunk mat, radiator, AC lines, etc. Clear AZ title from 1972.

Do you have any undercarriage photos of the car by chance?

Will post tomorrow. Underside is very clean, would be a good candidate for dry ice blasting.

How has the process been with BAT? Did they give you a hard time with your reserve price?

BAT is certainly not fast. But overall not bad to work with. It should go live in the next week or so.
