Hello Everyone,
I recently purchased a 1970 XR7 in Competition Gold. I didn’t realize that only 91 XR7 Hardtops were made in Competition Gold until I purchase the Marti report. The car was ordered in October of 1969. Did they stop offering that color later on in production? Any information would be appreciated. I emailed Don over at WCCC and he said I should ask in this forum as you all are a very helpful group. Attached is the Marti Report. I also look forward to any information on the rarity and value. Thanks

Very nice find. Please post pictures for us to see. Checking “Cougar…by the Numbers”, 91 is correct. I’ve never heard anything about a color being discontinued. I assume it was just few ordered in that color. Consider yourself privileged and get to uploading some pictures for us!
That is a well optioned XR-7 as well as a rare color. I too would like to see pictures.
Home Office Reserve at Ford on lease plan would explain the different color choice and options.
Actually 1 of 44 with paint and trim so that is 1 rare kitty. And to top it off a M code with tilt. Definitely post some pics of that car. I am a big fan of that color. I had a eliminator that was suppose to be that color…
thanks

I believe you’ll find that what makes it a rare color in this case is because the car is an XR-7 hardtop.
Standard Hardtops puts you at 724 with that paint code (U), of which 404 were Eliminators.
I guess the XR-7 crowd didn’t like the color!
The pictures are not pretty (yet). Restoration was started years ago and never finished. Everything is there that is needed. Drivetrain is complete and original. I’ll probably be on here a lot in the coming months. I will be happy to send along pictures as the progress continues. Thanks everyone.
My favorite color of them all. Very nice car there…
thanks

Very nice, cant wait to see it done!
Competition Gold was popular in my home area (Utica-Rome NY) in the period, but seemingly on Cyclones and Montegos. With that big-port Cleveland and restoration partially done, you’ve got something really exciting!
