Score! Smart to buy one that has been restored, Electrolytic capacitors rarely make it 50 years. Had to replace them in my AM radio too. Is that what your car had originally, or do you still listen to 8 track tapes? Just curious.
The “Cougar” on the 8 track door is a sticker. WCCC has information on how to remove it. Anyone know of a source of that sticker? I’d like to add it to my AM/8track.
If you want to go on Ebay and look at this listing, the Ebay # 226434784578. I don’t think I would of bought any other original radio then this one. Looks like I may have to clean up the tape flip door and put a shine on the surrounding black surfaces.

Gene
My friend gave me a couple, but just for show. The artists is not ones that I would listen to. Now, the challenge is to find new 8 track tapes. Not sure if any exists now. Do you have any sources?
I have some old rock classics, but the cases are warped from years spent in my first Cougar, and they sound pretty bad. I see lots of used 8 tracks on ebay, but probably hard to find many that sound better. I see a few albums being re-released on 8 track on Amazon. Kinda funny that we’ve gone from albums to tape to CD to streaming, and now going back to the old media again.
Analog Rules!
My parts car is a 70 xr7 and it has an AM/FM 8 track without the cougar on the tape door. I thought it was original to the car as the car is unmolested. Now I will have to take it out and look at the number so I can sleep at night!
Here’s a pic of it still in the car. I’m to lazy to pull it out right now… It looks like it belongs there!
The original one for 67-70 Cougars was just AM and 8 track. AM/FM with 8 track didn’t come along until later. But that one does look like a later Ford unit that fits nicely. No need pulling it out!
Edit - looking closer at your photo, looks like they have cut the top out of your bezel so that taller radio will fit.
The knobs are not compatible with the shafts as they stick out too far. Based on the AM/FM selector buttons, I would say that is probably a 1976, 77 or 78 radio. There will be a part number on the case that will confirm. I think in 1979 is when they changed the cases.
Did you check on the Marti Report to see which type of radio the car was ordered with? I’m going to try to match my car with the Marti Report. Will see how it will fit.
Your radio looks real good. As far as the knobs sticking out too far, there may of been a modification on the fly during installation. If that was the case, I would of thought they would of had the manufacturer make a change to the design.
It does look pretty good in the car, but the knobs stick out too far and the radio face is too tall for the bezel because that stereo unit did not exist in 1970. You can see where a previous owner has cut the top off the bezel so that the taller newer unit could fit.
Looks like Audiovox circa 1973
