1970 XR7 Vert Front Speaker Replacement?

Hello All,

I have a decent Pioneer USB Stereo in my '70 XR7 Vert (non A/C) but that front dash speaker has to go! Is this one from WCCC a direct replacement or will it require modifications?

I am taking the dash pad out to replace the gauge lenses so seems like the right time to upgrade that speaker!

Thanks in advance.

Joe V.

The issue with under dash speakers in the convertibles is thickness. They only attach with two screws, one on each end. Here is what will come out (I used 2 3x5’s).

From behind dash. I added the attached flex strapping to the cougar decal screw/pin. Even with the old speaker, there seemed too much play. With the WCCC speaker I would use a side screw hole to figure out a similar way to secure it.

@Mike_from_NH thanks! So, that speaker from WCCC does in fact need modifications…it is not “plug and play”? Looks like that has 4 screws to hold it on…was hoping it was a direct replacement…thanks for the info!

I used one of these in my 70XR-7,

I don’t recall having to do any mods to it. What you did should be fine.

OK cool thanks…I have not done anything yet but just want to know what I am in for and if I should order that replacement speaker…it fits fine in terms of height/width without any mods or brackets???

Hi Joe,.
I used the JBL’s because they were 1 9/16” thick. IIRC the ford speaker was 1 5/8” thick, so I wanted to be at or thinner. I was concerned about how tight it all was (non AC 69 convertible). If you read the WCCC NOTES, in non AC cars they may crush the duct.

It looks like the WCCC have a screw slot at both end. That was all the old ford speaker had, two screws
I suggest adding the additional support because the original speaker was not well supported. I would add it to an original, the WCCC or what i installed for peace of mind.

Here is a link to what I installed a few years ago. They got cheaper. :joy:

Hope that helps

Speakers need a baffle to separate the front and rear wave. Otherwise the bass and much of the midrange will be cancelled out.

@Mike_from_NH @xr7g428 and sometimes when you take the dash off you find a little surprise in there! The speakers in the door are new too just not hooked up…once I connect those should be fine…I don’t need anything crazy!

You have no idea how jealous '67 and '68 owners are when they see this picture.

I still have to put it all back together! Changing out all the gauge lenses and putting in LEDs/red diffusers in place of blue…not too bad actually…

While it is apart, take a good look at your hydraulic top switch. Mine going bad was what caused me to open up the dash in the first place.

Thanks man…for right now all the switches work great but will check them out…

@Mike_from_NH all good! Got it all put back together and somehow everything works as it should

Even got the door speakers active (they were installed but incorrectly wired)…long Sunday but a good one!
