New to the forum: I just inherited the family 1972 Mercury Cougar XR7. My mom’s cousin is the original purchaser, and until now, was the only owner. I was always told it had drum brakes in back and disc brakes in the front. I never had any reason to doubt that information. Well… yesterday, I took off both the driver’s side wheels, and much to my surprise - this XR7 has 4 drum brakes!!! The small bit of research I have done suggests this is very, very rare. It possible it was ordered with the “disc brake delete” option, but I don’t know??? Can anyone offer up any information?? Thank you very much.
Welcome! We would love to see pics of your car! Power front disc brakes became standard in 1973. They were still an option in 1972, but only 1227 out of 26802 XR7 hardtops (according to Kevin Marti’s Cougar by the Numbers) didn’t have them. You might consider ordering a Marti Report for your car showing exactly what options and colors it was equipped with from the factory.
