1972 Ford no start due to tilt column issue

My 72 thunderbird suddenly won’t crank anymore, and i believe it’s due to the steering wheel falling all the way down in the tilt mechanism, causing the rod that actuates the ignition switch is pulled too far forward to engage the switch.

Just want to make sure this could be my problem because I’ve been hunting down why it won’t start for a year now.

Also ive seen some videos saying the 70 and beyond years of tilt columns are harder to get to the tilt mechanism and harder to reinstall because of internal gearing for the ignition tumbler. I’ve worked on some small stuff before so I’m hoping it’s something I can get done myself instead of paying labor for a shop to do it.
