I need to remove the power window motors on the passenger’s front door and rear quarter window on a 72 XR7 convertible. The workshop manual talks about drilling 3 3/4 holes in the door after removing the panel. It seems like there should be a better way. Anybody out there able to give me any advice? I would really appreciate it. I can hear the motor running but nothing happens so I want to take them out to see what is going on.
Thanks
I don’t want to steal your thread, but I assume you took the door panels off, I have heard this is very tricky, did you have any difficulty, tips?
The previous owner had the door panels screwed in place, so yes I did remove the panels, but since they’re already screwed up I wasn’t as concerned. Are you concerned about removing the clips? They actually pop off pretty easily especially if you have one of those special two prong tools that you can get from Eastwood ( and I assume from most auto parts stores). In a pinch, you can use a flat blade screwdriver, but be careful not to put too much pressure on one side over the other. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have other questions. In the meantime, I hope someone can give me an answer on removing the motors.
Yes thanks that was my concern. I looked at my 73 shop manual about removing the motors and it says what yours says, man I hope someone has a better way than that, seems ridiculous to me
We have a video on how to remove the rears, the fronts are easy, no drilling needed.
Don, thanks, I looked at the You Tube video on WCCC and the rear pancake motor looks like a lot of fun to remove. Can’t wait, NOT!! Anyway, is there a video on removing the front motors or can you walk me though it?
Thanks
Really no need, take off the door panel and there it is…
Don, thank you. I don’t mean to sound like a dumb**s, but when I removed the door panel all I see is metal with very small opening. Just don’t want to screw anything up. Thanks again.
The door openings aren’t very large, but post up a picture so we have an idea of what your are seeing and we’ll try to guide you from there.
I understand about not wanting to screw anything up ~ I’m right there with you! What is it that the doctor’s oath says? “First, do no harm”, or something like that?
Thanks Mike, car is in storage so I will get a picture posted tonight.
Mike and Don, sorry it has taken me so long to post the picture. I guess the first step is to get the after-market speaker out of the door. But after that, I would like to know which nuts/bolts need to be loosened and how to remove the window motor. any advice you can give is greatly appreciated.
Thanks
So is it two bolts or three that hold the motor in? I don’t want to loosen anything that I don’t need to. Hate to have to adjust regulator.
Thanks
Mike, Don, anybody??
The power window motor is bolted to the window regulator. You will need to remove the regulator from the door and then remove the motor from the regulator. The regulator is held onto the door by 4 bolts, 7/16ths socket as I recall. You will need to have a second set of hands to do the job. When you go to unbolt the regulator from the door the glass will want to fall down, which risks breaking it. And power window glass is different from manual glass, much harder to find replacements. It’s a pretty easy job.

Cathouse, thank you! I now have a project for the weekend.
Thanks coachJack, and midlife. I figured they were accessory lighting of some sort. Build date was 6/16/67 so, just the three boxes in the trunk. I may do devil dogs bypass anyway, just to delete that bracket, and to simplify, simplify.
