1973 cougar XR-7

I have this 73 XR-7 I’m looking to sell. No engine or transmission. I would like to get $1000… I have a South Carolina title in hand. I got this 6 or 7 years ago. The body is a little rough. It sat for 20 ish years before I bought it and has been sitting since. I was going to put it on the rotisserie and bottom up restore it with a coyote swap, but I decided I dont want to put that kind of time and money into this particular car. The interior is intact and in fair condition. Black Interior, its a little musty, but in ok shape otherwise. I’m in Greer South Carolina and i don’t have any means of delivering it. Looks like a 71/72 tail lights installed on your 73. I like it. I wonder if only the tail lenses and bezels were swapped or the entire rear bumper?

Looks like a 71-72 bumper. I don’t see the square chrome bolt heads that were on 73 rear bumpers.

I wouldnt have had any idea the bumper was wrong. The old man i bought it from had 3 or 4 cougars he was selling because he was terminally ill. He said he dated a girl in high school and her dad bought this car new for her, so he drove it some back when it was new. Many years later, he came across the car and bought it (he didnt wind up with the girl). He let his son drive it when he was in high school and he wound up tearing up the motor. So they were going to restore it, never got back to it and it sat for 20+ years until i bought it in 2018.

There is something in the back seat that could be the bezels.

The bezels in the back seat are the 1971-1972 taillight bezels. Not that it really matters but it also has the wrong steering wheel. It should have a 3 spoke rimblow wheel and not a standard 2 spoke.

Looks like an extra set of bezels in the back seat. Very interesting. Thanks for both replies. I still wonder if I can swap out the lenses and bezels only?

Yes, you can swap the 1971-1972 style lenses and bezels into a 1973. And you can swap the 1973 lenses and bezels into a 1971-1972. It would have to done as both the lens and the bezel from the same year. It would not work trying to place a 1973 bezel over a 1971-1972 lens or trying to place a 1971-1972 bezel over a 1973 lens.

Thank you!

I e-mailed WCCC before asking the question here and they advised that it won’t work unless I change the buckets? Is this correct. Here is a photo of my buckets when I upgraded to LED a few years ago.

My first Cougar was almost a 73 but the guy thought the engine was bad and refused to sell it.
First one in the family was a 76 XR-7.

Ok, so I had to look into this deeper. I had a 71-2 left taillight lens and a 73 left taillight lens here so I pulled them out. Laying the 71-2 on top of the 73 lens all the screw holes line up except for the 2 that would be closest to the center of the car. The 73 lens is slightly longer than the 71-2 lens. I did not measure the difference, but I would say that it is about 3/16th of an inch. My next step will be to dig out some of the housings to see how the lenses fit. That will take me a little while as those housings are a bit more work to get out and I have a lot of things on my to do list this coming week.

I appreciate your response and taking the time to further research my question!

Did you get a chance to check on this? Just curious. Thank you for your time.

No, I have not yet had the time to dig out any of the 71-73 taillight housings. It is on my to do list.
