Hello everyone I am new here and my Cougar has no dash lights no RPM , no fuel basically the only thing is working is the speedometer because it’s cable driven, can anyone help me???
Welcome to the madness Post some pics if you get a chance. You’re going to need a wiring schematic for sure (click the link below) and I would suggest a shop manual. I like the CD versions but some like the books.
No RPM I’m assuming you mean Tachometer. Car won’t run if the tach is bad, “some” jumper the wires and bypass the tach when it an issue.
Fuel gauge, you’ll have to trouble shoot, unplug the connection at the tank, ground one lead and try and start the car, if the gauge pegs to full your wiring is good and the gauge is good.
Dash light could be just bulbs, if original they are old.
I’m sure your overwhelmed, take a breath and fix one thing at a time
Check all the fuses are good first, but if they are you’ll probably have to pull the instrument cluster and check the connections and see what shape the printed circuit board is in.
I am trying but cant get my hand behind the cluster!
As mentioned above, you’re going to have to pull the IP, detach the speedo cable and IP plug. Not fun but not impossible. Go to RockAuto and get some bulbs while your at it
It is easier to reach the dash wiring connector and speedo cable from the top. It is simple to remove dash cover and dash pad as an assembly. If your car is an A/C car there is usually enough slop in the drivers side A/C vent tube to wiggle it out. Then you should be able to reach over the top into the dash. The electrical connector is removed by pinching in on both sides of the connector. There is a spot on the speedo cable connector to pinch and get it to release. Agreed, it is hard to find a path for your hand to reach these connectors from underneath. Good luck!
On my 73, I did not have a good connection between the battery terminal and the frame.
Hope this helps
Grounds and vacuum will drive you crazy if they are awry. Original NEG battery cable went from the battery, clipped to the voltage reg and then to the engine block. If you look at the WCCC website there is a diagram.
