1985 Cougar LS 5.0L HELP!!!

So what can I add to this thing to get upwards to 300 HP out of it? Or would I want to go the route of finding a boss HO from a similar year mustang to plug in?

Going to assume your not well versed in building/rebuild a motor. Your best option and most cost effective would be a create motor long block. Added on a stand alone fuel injection system with MSD ignition. or buy one fully dressed. Just a mater of picking what you want that matches your budget.

I’m not very well versed with engines you are correct. I’m teaching myself and making huge strides and becoming confident, I am a hotel maintenance technician currently but I have done full house builds, work with huge electrical contractors and am HVAC certified.

I can do all suspension work, body work is a skill id like to learn better I’m decent. I’m a sponge and I soak up as much knowledge as I go I’m finally understanding engines well enough to want to buy a boss HO to build or pull this motor to rebuild but I really need someone’s help understanding some concepts.

What would be some issues I’d run into by getting a similar mustang HO engine? I was reading harnesses maybe in an earlier comment would I be able to convert the harnesses somehow if they don’t match up or something?

Obviously nothing is as easy as building it dropping it in and driving it. I guess I’m not understanding how to drop in a motor that didn’t exist previously because ive never seen the process.

I really appreciate your time.

I’m going to look for vacuum leaks on the cougar later but I don’t think I have one to be honest.

I see a pool of coolant above my thermostat, I think when I put a new bypass hose on that I either put hose clamps on too tight or left it too long.

I’m thinking about just finding an 85 coug and looking for the wiring harness for the OBDI sensor so I can work off engine codes instead of guessing

With that 5 grand 306 is that engine stronger than a boss HO? Is there anything with more HP you can point me in the direction of or should I stick with that?

What other mods can I do? Would I be able to upgrade the transmission and or mod the suspension to add air suspension from the Lincoln Mark platform?

I also like the round airbox on top with the “EFI 5.0” sticker on it. Wouldn’t I lose that configuration by dropping this motor in or could I always just drop the air box back on top?

The second motor seems to be a better fit from what I read in the comments.

Thank you very much.

I’ll create an account somewhere later to add pictures of what ive got currently.

Update

I fixed a broken vacuum line to the EGR, I also took this yellow three headed round vacuum solenoid and tried to clean it, it has a lot of carbon build up in it but broke it. I’ll have to get one from a yard but glued the broken mounts back on. It goes to the evap canister. I hear a noise coming from my gas tank area, my vacuum to my choke doesn’t seem to always be running but I think I’m starting to understand it doesn’t always need to.

I followed that vac line to the vacuum electrical under the coolant reservoir and found.a bunch of connectors that needed to be cleaned because they were filled with shit

The vacuum to the EGR isn’t always running not sure it matters. I found some vacuum leaks and it was running better but now is sucking up gas.

I want to check timing now that I fixed all these vacuum leaks and also I tried to disconnect the gas cap to see if hissing sound from gas tank would stop but no.

Bump

What would cause the car to bumble, stumble but not stall on initial start up for the day?

The vacuum lines I found were all operating properly I think, I found the vacuum electrical under the coolant reservoir tank and gave them all a much needed cleaning. I want to replace the round vacuum part with three mounts on it because I broke it and I’m not sure it wasn’t operating properly in the first place.

I also sprayed cleaner into the intake and saw a lot of carbon come out but still don’t think the cat is clogged.

I’m putting the mustang on the road next week to work on the cougar’s suspension and get it a fender but I really want to know what’s wrong with this engine, it feels like a valve or electrical issue that can ve solved easily I just don’t have the knowledge for it yet.

Also as a note, I know that guy said 86 didn’t have convertibles, but my title says 1986 Ford mustang V6

Okay so I learned all about the stuff I talked about prior. I grabbed the solenoid that goes to the fuel canister off my mustang since it’s not plated yet and verified it works properly. Timing is correct now as well.

However I did a throttle body clean last week and got black smoke out the tail pipe when I finished. I keep losing my gas gauge which also started about the same but just before the canister problem.

My gauge bottoms out when idle at times and floats a lot. I can hear noise that sounds like rushing air in the gas tank regardless of how the solenoid is hooked up, if the gas cap is on or off.

When I prime the fuel pump i hear a loud clicking type sound just once. I’m unsure if a sensor doesn’t work, fuel pump is weak or dying or if there’s a clog in a line somewhere. I kinda suspect regulator or Injectors

Also, last night when idling for a bit, I noticed my headlights wouldn’t keep voltage constantly. They would dim slightly at times, this just started.

What do I check for? All grounds and check for breaks in connections?

Also I’m looking for a fully digital cluster gauge as I have the partially digital. I want to see my RPMs. If anyone can find one online with a link for me because I can’t id appreciate it.

I’ve been reading into CFI to SEFI swap but I want to make the car run properly before any mods are done. I spend a lot of time in all of the Cougar forums regardless of year. You guys know a lot and i appreciate it.

Thank you for your time have a great evening
