2026 Auction Week - Fantasy Bid

Happy New Year! Our gracious host Bill’s recent post reminiscing on his garage gatherings during auction week in Scottsdale reminded me that it’s time for the annual fantasy bid contest. Those were always fun events - including Arizona Club’s gathering hosted by Scott, the tours of Marti’s museum, CCOA dinners, Marcus Anghel’s open house, etc. I’m stuck in Duluth this year, but hope to make it next year.

This year’s candidate is a 1969 XR-7 equipped with a 428CJ and 4 speed manual.

1969 CJ XR-7 4 speed

I’ll donate $50 to this site in your name to the person who fantasy bids the closest.

Eligible bids need to be posted here before the car gets on stage. Only one entry per person. Use the “hammer” price before commissions. Closest can be over or under, but under wins in the event of a tie. You can edit your bid, so long as you do it before the car hits the stage. If someone has a good estimate of time, let us know. Void where prohibited. Judge’s ruling is final. Your mileage may vary.

Other Cougars up for auction are listed for conversation purposes - not part of the fantasy bid:

1969 Restomod

1970 Eliminator

Also a bunch of Cats going to Mecum - Kissimmee

I will go with 99k

Saying that this car was restored to factory-correct specifications / standards, was a little inspired. I know, because I restored my former CJ XR7 differently than it left the factory.

I would like to see the Marti Report and the rest of the documentation “….Home Office Reserve service, carrying extensive documentation supporting its configuration and history.”

Inquiring minds want to know.

Maybe some under carriage photos……….

Documentation would be good to see - especially if bidding with real money. The sport special rockers and dog dish wheel covers aren’t typical for an XR-7. But I kinda like the look of the wheels.

I love the gold as well, but think that will not bring big money. The sport special rockers and poverty caps look good, but are not original. The radials will also hurt the originality. I’m going $64,000.00

60k is my guess

It appears that it has been converted to 1970 bolt in door glass.

I’m in for $105K. Factory 4spd with the CJ as original equipment. BUT, I realize “it’s just a Cougar”, eh?

Doubt Bob Perkins would have approved of a bunch of incorrect items: Cheap electrical fittings of the horn wiring to the middle of the horn brackets, worn hood hinges, paint missing from where fenders meet the radiator core brace, ?correct snorkel with incorrect sticker placement, non FoMoCo radiator, unsecured driver’s side wiring harness from cowel, lack of Ford Blue paint on smog tube check valve, Cheap radials (for a national auction), wrong rocker trim mouldings.

71K.

AM/FM Stereo is a mid 1970’s version also. The balance slide bar under the push buttons gives it away.

Despite all the ‘shortcomings’ ( and there are a lot - but none are ‘fatal’ and can’t be rectified ) I’m estimating an auction price of 82,500 $

I know it’s fully restored but it just doesn’t have the looks of an Eliminator. $54,500

Referring to the recent BaT 69CJ ramair sale…

$69,428

4spd is rare and desirable, but this car lacks a certain ‘curb appeal’. Bit of effort to bring it home.

B-J has added some scheduling info to their website. The car is set for Thursday, Jan. 22. No time estimate currently available.

P.S. I wish people selling cars would take their cars away from the storage facility for photography. Personal bias, I guess.
