351 Cleveland water pump install

I am install a new water pump on the 351c. Has anyone done this before? The bolt pattern seems odd. When line the water pump up, the most top 3 bolt holes (see photo) are not used? However it matches up correctly with the water pump (see below). Is this correct?

The top three bolts are in a triangle pattern, and the very top one threads into the timing cover, but not into the block. Here are pics of an original 70 351C water pump in the correct orientation for reference.

The parts store gave you a Windsor pump. The two open holes are for the backing plate and bolts that the Cleveland doesn’t use.

I keep this on the shop wall.

What through me was only 1 heater hose nipple. The Windsor, and 302 have 2. One is for the thermostat housing bypass. But the more closely I look at it the more I’m thinking it is for a Windsor.

That threw me too - his pump looks like a Windsor pump except it’s missing the upper hose nipple. In any case, it won’t work on the Cleveland.

Thank you guys. Long story short this pump was purchased brand new several years ago by my father in law. He never put in on ont he engine because he got sick. I contacted emp Stewart connection, who produced the pump and the tech said “the top two holes are not used.” That does not sound right. Can any suggest a good water pump manufacturer? Other than emp

I’ve been happy with my FlowKooler Cleveland water pump. Installed in 2017 during my whole cooling system retrofit-water pump, hoses (with spring for lower), radiator, correct Cleveland thermostat, radiator cap, dual electric fans and PWM fan speed controller. No overheating issues since then.

I’ve got a FlowKooler on my Cleveland too, but it has always been noisy. Whistles like a boiling teapot as it warms up, and sounds like a squeaky door hinge when you spin it by hand. FlowKooler was zero help. It cools great, but I’m going back to the pictured date code correct original with high performance impeller.

Thanks for the tip cali cat. What is a date code correct original? Is that a rebuilt original?

Thanks wawazat, I appreciate the help. Any particular model you would recommend flowkooler for the Cleveland? Any help is appreciated

Yes, I got a rebuilt original D0OE-D with the correct date code for the rest of my engine. Way too expensive an option for anyone not looking to keep numbers matching (or with more common sense than I have - lol!). Here is a high flow one that I had considered:

Thank you sir. I appreciate the help and advise

Oh, and the other thing I like about cast iron is you are less likely to strip the threads when tightening the alternator, AC, and power steering brackets. Good luck!

I’m pretty sure it was this one

I like the aluminum version as it weighs less and requires no paint.
