Here we go again! If I didn’t have bad luck I wouldn’t have any luck at all!
Just finished doing a Cam swop and I must say it went great. A perfect Cam selection from Mr Phillips. Thank again!
But since then I have had one problem…an antifreeze leak!
When i notice it leaking was after I put the new cam in and put antifreeze in the rad before the Cam break in. Engine not running. I noticed antifreeze dripping from the bottom of the water pump so I took the rad out alternator and power steering pump off then the water pump.
This time I put silicone on both sides of the gasket put it back together and put antifreeze in. No leaks. Started the car to break in the cam and everything went great until the next day I noticed antifreeze dripping again. Looks like passenger side of water pump and almost looks like between the timing chain cover.
That was my concern when the water pump was off the timing case cover was loose at the top because there are only two bolts that hold that cover on at the bottom. Could that make antifreeze leak between the block and the chain case and maybe leak antifreeze into the oil pan? If so should I take off the timing chain cover and change the gasket? If so what the best way to approach this issue?
Did you replace the water pump with a new/rebuilt unit when you had it off?
No
This one was only maybe 8 years old but I did today and bought a new time chain cover. Not messing around. The old cover had pitting marks for some reason. So all will be new. Just have to wait until they arrive.
Where should a add the silicone?
Been a long time since I messed w/a C, but aren’t they a PITA with the 2 gaskets between the front cover & the block, then the o/s of the front cover & the WP? Double the chances for leaks, no? If the WP or o/s gasket was leaking, I don’t think it would pollute the area behind the TC cover, right? More likely the gasket on the i/s of the cover that seals the water passages. Still, I wouldn’t trust an 8 y/o water pump when you’re doing all that work anyway.
Adding: I generally use a modest bead of RTV for something like this. On a complicated water pump/block/front cover interface like this, I might tie the gasket in place with a little thread through the bolt holes to makes sure the gasket doesn’t move under assembly.
I wouldn’t use silicone to seal a timing cover or water pump. A good gasket cement like Gasgacinch will work better.
You use that with the gaskets?
Gasgacinch? Yes.
Only place to use RTV in these engines is at the corners of the intake and corners of the oil pan gaskets. Maybe a little at the edges of the rear main seal.
Its an awful design, makes you wonder what they were thinking
Anytime your working with silicone, after assembly you should wait at least a day for it to set up/cure.
Yeah
I just bought a new Aluminium timing cover of Ebay. Looks nice (blue) went to put it on and it didn’t fit! I could see inbetween the rubber and the oil pan! Wast of money!
Looks like it fit after all. Poor install skills lol forgot to tighten up the oil pan bolts! Lol
