351w block casting numbers

Hello all,

I am considering the purchase of a rebuilt 351w 4V engine for my “M” code, 69 Cougar to restore it to factory spec. The casting number on the block is C90E, with a build date of 9B24. I understand casting numbers and build dates…my question is whether or not this engine is correct for a 69 application. I came across one (Mustang) website that says “C9XX” casting numbers indicate a '70 application. I understand the the '69 / '70 blocks were essentially the same, but if I am going to spend some real money on this, I want to be as authentic as possible. Should I be looking for a “C8XX” casting?

Thoughts anyone…?

The build date is for a February 28th 1969 built engine. Yes both 69 and 70 use the C9OE casting number. This would be correct for a March or early April 1969 built car. It should have a VIN number stamped on it on the L/H side rear of the block.

Ok…thanks. My XR7 rolled off the line in November '68. Guess I’ll need to decide if that’s close enough, or if I need to keep looking.
