Ran into a local today (on foot) at a Rally. Has a ‘69 Cougar with a 351W. He says the driver’s side exhaust manifold has 2 1/4” collector, passenger side has 2” collector. Did the 351W have options on collector side? He’s looking for one with 2 1/4” for the right side. Thanks for any info.
Well, in answer to myself for anyone else seeking - the 2” was likely a 289/302 manifold that replaced the original 351W manifold. Apparently 289/302 used 1.75” or 2” and the 351 used 2.5” collectors. Can’t confirm, but I believe this to be the case.
Sometimes the answers don’t come right away. Asked questions in other parts of the forum. NOTHING. So take it as it comes I guess???
Factory H-pipes have same size pipe I thought it was 2.25.
Casting #s will be C9…. on the manifolds
Not feeling slighted really. I just continue to look for answers in several places (books and online) and if I find it first I post back in case anyone else would like to know. Sometimes I have to assume that the people that look, don’t have an answer. It’s still a great compendium of useful information.
I ordered a complete exhaust from WCCC for my 1969 351 W 4v. It was 2 1/4”. I am using stock exhaust manifolds. I believe I read the single exhaust is 2” but I would assume the collector off the exhaust manifold would have to be 2 1/4”. Not sure on that.
Retro, think you have the right answer with someone doing a cheap fix by putting an easier to find 302 manifold on the 351w. The 302 will bolt up to the 351w head. The “ rally guy” could check the numbers on the manifold to be sure. Years ago was pretty common to do cheap repairs on these cars just to keep them running.
Halbey, Mr_580: thanks for the feedback. Pretty sure that’s what happened. Next time I run up with him I’m going to try and see numbers on the manifold. I’ve got a feeling he isn’t going to want to spring for the correct deal. It’s a little bit of a shame really, it’s a fairly decent car and it’s an “SS” trim package; I just don’t know which level (A,B,C,D). It does have the rocker panels though - probably worth a couple grand right there!
