427 cyclone

I have a 67 427 cyclone and I am trying to figure out if the block in it is original. It has a casting of c5ae-a , has the cross bolts and has a plug on the driver side of timing cover like a side oiler. But it does not have the plugs down the side like a side oiler . Also has pressed I’m freeze plugs .The rest of the engine I believe to be original but the block I am not sure. Does any know anything about these 427 cyclones Thanks Jeffdn

The same castings were graded for cylinder wall clearance and that would be the determining factor wether it became an automobile side oiler or an industrial/ marine center oiler 427.

Sounds like you found the less desirable version.

I have compiled a registry of the 427 Comets. I used to own an R code 202 sedan and been able to locate about a third of the 60 427 cars that were originally produced. I would be curious to see if yours is on our list. Thanks

First of all, thanks for letting me put this on a cougar forum Not much out there on a 67 cyclone. What I have found is the 427casting c5ae-a came in a couple cobras and 1965 galaxies. I also seen where it was called the transition block from a center oiler to side oiler. this block has the gallery plug to the left of the timing chain cover but does not look like it has the plugs down the side. With ford only making a handful of 66-67 fairlane and mercury 427 cars. Do you think this 427 block casting c5ae-a could be original to this car? Royce this could be a less desirable block but is it the original block. I would have liked it to have a c5ae-h or a c5ae-g side oiler. Is there a website to the registry for these cars? Thanks jeffdn

Any chance you could post pictures? It would be educational for many of us to see this. One member here has a 67 Comet Caliente with the 427 and 4 speed. Maybe that might provide a clue, I believe there were 4 of those built.

Easy answer - no it has been replaced. 1967 Fairlanes, Cyclones, Galaxies, Marauders and 427 NASCAR engines were all side oilers with screw in freeze plugs.
Here’s the Fomoco internal memo on grading FE blocks.

A 1967 Cyclone could have been a W code or R code engine. In either case that engine would be a 427 Medium Riser solid lifter side oiler. Lots of flolks who don’t know better and lots of crooks who will say otherwise.

Does that memo apply to 68 Hyd 427s?

No it predates the 68 427 which also were all side oilers but with a hydraulic camshaft and single 4V carburetor.

Here is some pictures of C5AE-A block. Is this a center oiler or side oiler? What block casting would have came in this 1967 cyclone? Thanks

Is this c5ae-a block a center oiler or side oiler? What block casting would have come in the 67 cyclone 427

The original block in a 1967 427 Mercury Cyclone would be a side oiler with steel screw in freeze plugs.

Could be either depending how the casting was machined.

I assume it should be just like this

Thanks Royce

Picture shows a side oiler.

Your 67 Cyclone would have likely been born with a C7 solid lifter side oiler block. I’s quite a rare block. I have one on the shelf for my 67 R code Caliente. Bill, you and anyone else has my perpetual permission to use my name and phone number. Ray Bischoff 248 867-3522. I’m in S/E Michigan.

I’d love to chat about your car and help in any way possible.

Hey sjrdcr21136…who are you and where are you located? I’m guessing Pete and Sandy.

Yep, Pete and Sandy. We wanted to add this car to our list if it isn’t on it.
