427 GT-E VHT Engine Enamel Color Code?

Hi,

the 427 of my GT-E is finished, now we have to paint it.
Wondering whats the correct VHT Engine Enamel Color Code for the 427 GT-E ?

Thanks a lot
Joe

If you want to use a spray can, Plasti-kote NO.224 or Dupli-color DE 1606 good up to 500 deg. don’t forget to paint the intake.

Dupli-color DE-1621 is another one to try (Old Ford Blue). Seems to be debate on this vs. the 1606 depending on the era. My block was previously painted, but it was a good match.

On my '69, Plastikote 224 was a MUCH better match than the Duplicolor and I was comparing to original paint.

Thanks @ all. Will try to get the Dupli Enamel here in Germany… :shifty:

Duplicolor DE 1606 is the correct color if you want the correct, authentic color that would have been present on a new 1968 Ford engine.

Old Ford Blue is the correct color for 1964 Ford 260 Cubic inch valve covers and air cleaner. It is a totally incorrect color for any 1966 - later Ford, Mercury, Lincoln or Ford truck.

To answer your original question, VHT SP125 Engine Enamel Ford Dark Blue is the correct color in that brand.

Woooohoooo!
VHT is available here at Parts store!
Thank you Royce!

Would this also be the correct color for a 390 for 1968? VHT SP125 Engine Enamel Ford Dark Blue ??

Yes, they are all same.

That’s wrong.

Yes, all Ford engines from 1966 model year until about 1980 used Ford Corporate Dark Blue. I believe 1980 model year (began July 4, 1979 officially) started the grey engine era at Ford.

NPD also sells a custom mix in an aerosol can.

82 was the cut-off year. I had an 82 GT with a blue block, probably due to a rebuild by the previous owner, but correct should’ve been black. Here is a list with some of the cross reference numbers for various brands and years :

Good info. I will save that page.

Has anyone tried the NPD paint and compared it to VHT?

Charlie

^^^ after researching and reading, I decided to go with the NPD paint. Can’t recall exactly what the deciding factor was and I didn’t do a comparison with VHT.

To my eyes, the NPD looked bright when it went on but it darkened up as it dried.

As for durability - I’ve only driven a couple hundred miles since reinstalling the freshly painted engine - but so far so good.

Attached are a few pics. The air cleaner base and G snorkel were already painted by a previous owner and I haven’t repainted them yet with the NPD. They are a pretty good match, just a smidgen lighter - but I am going to do a little repair work and paint them with the NPD product.

Thanks for the pics. That helps me make my decision.

Philip your engine and engine bay looks great. That Ford blue really pops!
Steven

Thanks Steven -

It is a very “amateur” restoration. I just wanted it to look decent. I am going to drive the snot out of this car so whoever gets it next is going to have to restore it again anyway. Or would that be “re-restore”

Some of the items hanging off the engine weren’t supposed to be blue - I did remove and strip them.

Anyway, the NPD paint went on really well - seemed to be high quality and their product description reads:

PAINT, ENGINE ENAMEL, FORD (DARK) CORPORATE BLUE, NPD S EXCLUSIVE SPRAY CAN FORMULATION OF THE SUPER CORRECT PPG 13358 ENGINE ENAMEL, AN EXACT MATCH TO THE PPG CODE MAKES THIS THE MOST AUTHENTIC CORPORATE BLUE IN A SPRAY CAN!
