Hello,I have a 69 marine 427 I’m going to use,the machine work is done and it’s all greased up and put away so I can’t get at it right now.My question is lifters,it had solids in it I’ve got hydrolics for it I had run a wire down the oil passages and I did run into a dowel plug on each side but the wire would go past it so I was thinking I was ok,but I recently read they had to drilled,at the time I checked it I thought I was good but now I’m wondering about it.any input.
It is a side Oiler casting but not drilled for side oiling
I’m not a 427 expert, but I thought the late marine 427s were hydrolic liters. Maybe Royce knows.
To my knowledge if it wasn’t drilled you need to run solid lifters. Farrand would know.
Question, I have heard that some of marine engines had a reverse rotation for use with twin screw set ups. Is that true?
True
I’ve never heard of a hydrolic lifter.
I see,yes I need spelling lesson.
nah, we just need a good spill chucker
Randy, block cast as side oiler but drilled either center oiler or top oiler. If the side of block is machined to fit marine exhaust the pan rail is to thin to drill thru. So can not be changed. It’s solid lifter all the way. Look @ pic in link

Hope this helps

427 Marine and industrial engines are all over the map as far as how they were machined. Let’s see some good quality images of the back of the block and the lifter valley. It’s not advisable to attempt drilling oil passages for hydraulic lifters. It it’s a solid lifter block just use it that way. The old wives tale about solid lifters needing frequent adjustment is just that. Get good quality aftermarket rockers like Harland Sharp for example. Adjust them properly, once, and they won’t need adjustment for 20,000 or more miles with typical street valve spring pressures and a typical street camshaft.
