Having the motor on a stand is really cool because I can see everything now. I noticed that the rear two bolts on the 428 CJ intake manifold were different than the other 8 bolts (still installed). So I ordered two more bolts from WCCC but the new ones are way too long. In perusing the WCCC website and looking at bolts sets, I see that there are 10 bolts in the set (all the same length) but with what appears to be 2 sleeves; maybe to compensate for the long bolts in back?
To further complicate matters, the 1970 Ford shop manual shows there being 2 different bolts for the intake manifold; 8 part # 370478 and 2 20408 (for the rear 2 mounting holes).
This is a 1970 Mercury Cougar Eliminator with 428 CJ/4-speed. Which configuration would be more correct? No AC, California emissions car.
The rev limiter, huh? I remember the day I took that puppy off and threw it into the dumpster where I lived at the time. I also remember sending some guy $350.00 for a replacement rev limiter not too long ago. Sheesh!
I also remember the day I took the snorkel off of the air cleaner and tossed it into the very same dumpster. It is still missing from the air cleaner but now it is more pricey than back then!
Don’t feel so bad. Back in the mid 70s I had a 71 Torino Cobra 429CJ 4 spd. Replaced the Rottenchester with a 800 spreadbore, shaffer clutch/PP/40# forged steel flywheel, replaced the factory Hurst shifter with a Hurst Super Shifter, Hooker headers, Lakewood scatter shield and all the old stuff in the trash. Including that pesky rev limiter. Replaced the dual/diaph dual points dist with a mech ACCEL one.
This is the rear of my 70 PI. I am sure it has had the intake off as one head is not original to this engine. You will note one side has the spacer and the other does not.
