That’s awesome work, Phillip. At the risk of being called a nit-picker, isn’t the cat head on your XR7G graphic a 69-70 thing?
No, They used the Gurney G with the cats heads in 67 for TA. Same logo as the Gurney Eagle.
This will make for some good CCOA memorabilia. Nice job Phil ![]()
In '69 Dan was driving a Shelby prepared Mustang in the Trans-Am (because of other commitments, Dan only drove in 2 TA races that year) and by '70 he had jumped ship from Ford/Mercury and was racing a Plymouth Barracuda.
Dan’s intimate involvement with the Cougar was in '67 as a driver and team captain and '68 as a spokesperson, so the melding of the “Screaming Cat” and the “Gurney G” date from those years.
Now I will say that the Screaming Cat logo was never used in association with the XR7-G Cougar that I know of, so I did take a little “Artistic License” with that - It looks good and it’s a natural fit in my book.

Thanks for the edumakation. That’s what I love about this community.
Me too, I’ve learned a ton here and over at the SAAC Forum and continue to.
Also, let me say, I appreciate you all pointing things out to me. Often, I post my art and graphics here before they are printed and I’d much rather catch anything before stuff is printed!
So don’t feel shy and I won’t take it personally (I’ve been doing this for over 40 years).
I’ll either agree and fix/alter the art or if not I’ll explain my thinking.

I just noticed something I missed - I had the Cobra Jet hood scoop body color when it should have been black!
Fixed it -

Oh my, good thing no one else noticed or a flogging may have been in order (lol).
Hey Phillip -
While we’re fantasizing, any chance for custom orders, like an Augusta Green GT-E w/a black 428 scoop and stripe?
Also, where are you getting water soluble decals done? I have an old Big Daddy Roth Cougar decal I’d like
to copy. Don’t want to separate the old decal from the backing that has the Roth logo. Will share!

^^^ Actually, once I have all of the “parts” drawn I can do custom orders for posters.
For instance, I already have the '67/'68 Cougar body, the GT-E grill and the Cobra Jet hood scoop, so I could put together a poster of your car.
PM me and we can discuss it.
And I am (and have been since my childhood) a HUGE fan of Ed 'Big Daddy" Roth and Roth Studios.
Most of the artwork that came out of Roth Studios in the '60s, including that awesome Cougar decal, were actually drawn by one of my personal art heros, Ed Newton.
Ed “Newt” Newton is still alive and kickin’ and producing awesome art. Google some images of his work when you have a chance.
- Phillip
Sorry for the thread drift, but one of the things I like about that decal is it is of a (rather tortured) GT-E.
Phillip: PM sent.
You know I would be very interested in a custom G poster based on my cat. E-mail me payment details.
I am really seeing the influence of the two Eds on the 2005 CCOA East National logo.
Yes, that artwork I did for the '05 Nats was my homage to the great Ed Newton!
Ed also designed some pretty wild rods.
- Phillip
I Googled him, quite a lot of stuff and I’ve seen before and others, no doubt, also inspired by Ed.
Google ed “newt” newton and click on images. He did dozens if not hundreds of designs for Roth.
The Roach Coach was also one of Newton’s designs, and it used those really deep dish Raders.

Remember when cars were fun? Can you even imagine something like this being built today? I don’t think a bunch of phone fixated people will ever be this creative again…
Creations like those often led to new features and options in cars years down the road.
These guys are innovators from another era.
All great points Bill! I don’t think that most of today’s crowd would give two looks at this creation at a car show, the bathing suit beauty…yes two looks for sure (then back to the smartphone screen). ![]()

I was digging through my stash of Cougar stuff, and found this certificate. I didn’t even remember that I had it - must have come along with the Gurney Cougar decals that I bought from AAR years ago.
Anyway, I know we were discussing the history of that graphic, so I thought I’d post this here.
- Phillip
I have one of the Gurney Cougar decals around here. No doubt in safe keeping with some of the other hens teeth I have found over the years.
