So I had asked this question once before, but it was mixed in with a bunch of other things that I asked. Thought it best to separated it out to get my response, and for others future reference because not much comes up when I do a search.
Trying to figure out where to run my speedometer cable on my car. It’s been along road back together, and I have no documentation of where it routed. I did a search over on the Concourse Mustang forum for the same, and come up with a spring clip at the drivers side rear fender apron just behind the distribution block (I have no hole there btw) Then a J or L bracket at the accelerator rod pivot. On the Mustang side it seems like it varies depending on the plant it was produced at, but either a separate hole next to the mount pivot, or a bracket in the lower of the 3 holes of the pivot bracket. Then I read it drapes over the bell housing, and is attached to the “passengers side toe board” I assume they mean floor pan in the area where the AC drain hole is. I find no holes anywhere in the area. It is then stated that it makes it’s way down and fits in the hole where the rear transmission cross member bolt to undercarriage. Makes sense as this hole is directly in line with the entrance into the transmission. So I got two reproduction clips one is silver and is what I call L shaped. Packaging said “at firewall” Looks a lot like the clip guys on CMF talk about for at the accelerator rod pivot. The other clip also wraps around the cable, and has plastic coating on part of it packaging said “at cross member” Seams like it would be the clip used if you have an auto transmission as there is a hole on the cross member DS, and correct me if I’m wrong the cable entrance on an auto trans is into the driver side tail, not passengers side like the 4-speed. And when you have an auto I found in the service manual under E-brakes that the speedo cable shares the bracket with the e-brake cable at the DS frame rail.
So after the accelerator rod pivot clip what is suppose to hold, a 4-speed cable and where?
Thanks!
David
There are very good pics of all you mentioned above in a 67 shop manual, its a very good tool to have with all the work you are doing.
Can you tell me what section cuz I have not seemed to find in in mine. Your talking about the big blue one that has Cougar, Mustang, and Mercury in it?
Yes that is the one Im talking about but it looks like I confused the shop manual with the assembly manual, its the assembly manual that has the speedometer routing.
Thanks to Paul for getting me photos from the assembly manual for the cable routing. (Sorry they are upside down) It confirmed, and cleared things up. One thing that I am still not sure on though is I have no hole at the PS toe board (floor pan detail U in the small unmarked circle) area for a clip. I have combed the area 3 times now, and see nothing except the hole for the AC drain hose. I suppose anything is possible back at Dearborn in the day that they missed adding the clip, or maybe they attached it somewhere up on the bottom side of the firewall in the exit area for the heater hoses/ac lines, thus pulling the cable up tight against the floor pan keeping it off the exhaust? If someone can help me out with how to locate the hole, and then what the proper clip would be. Is it a j clip similar to fuel lines or a full wrap around strap, and then does it just spring fit into a hole, or is it screwed on?
BTW I did find the hole behind the distribution block, that I initially stated wasn’t there. That’s why I have looked 3 times now for the other one Eyes just ain’t what they use to be now that I have to wear readers
Just bumping this topic to hopefully get some help on where to locate this hole dimensionally wise, hopefully what size hole it is, and which clip gets used to hold the cable at the point of “view in circle U”
I did find this photo in a different thread on the Concourse Mustang forum posted by a Mr Mike B. (I believe he is here as well maybe owning a 1970)
I believe it might be on a little newer car, in this picture as it doesn’t show the cable going through the hole in the trans crossmember where it joins the stiffener in the tunnel, and I thought it was suppose to?

Thanks again,

David, the two clips you have highlighted are holding the backup light switch wire, above that is the manual trans speedometer cable and the clip location you are looking for.
Yea I probably should have mentioned that I wasn’t looking at what was in the highlighted circles. Wasn’t my picture, but one that I copied from the mustang forum, on a topic of the backup light switch wire.
It’s where to locate the speedo cable clip that I am after. Don’t know why I don’t have that hole in my floor board. Any help anyone can give me there I would appreciate, otherwise I am going to make an educated guess and use a brakeline style clip.

I ordered a clip like this today to use on the passengers side floor pan to hold my speedo cable like the above link to picture shows. If anyone can help on how to locate/reference measure the hole placement I would appreciate it.
(again ignore the blue highlighted circles, that’s not what I am after as I know that is the reverse harness)
Thanks.
