67 390 GT

Hello all,

I am going to view a 1967 Cougar 390 GT that is for sale next week. The seller claims that the 390 cid is original. The specs indicate that the car should also have a C6 tranny and 9" limited slip 3.00 rear end. This would be my second Cougar purchase, but I am hoping to get some real advice on how to confirm all of the sellers claims while I’m there. Can anyone help?

Thanks,
Dennis

The door tag info should tell you a lot. Not sure if ford vin stamped 67 drive trains. If not casting dates will help but are no guarantee.

A Marti report will also help identify if it’s a GT. The vin # should start with either 7F91S (standard) or 7F93S (XR7). The S code in the vin # signifies the Marauder 390GT 4V but that does not mean the Cougar is a GT. This link to the Cougar Club of America details the difference between the 6.5 Litre option and the GT option: http://www.cougarclub.org/cougar-gt.htm

Where should I look for the casting number and build date on the engine block (390) and transmission. The tranny is supposed to be a C6…

The casting date on the block is between the oil filter and the pan. The C6 should have a tag on the side attached by a bolt. The trans should also have a partial VIN but that is stamped on the top and tough to see without removing the tranny.

Here is a pic of how the VIN looks on the transmission.

Thank you very much Phillip. I appreciate your help sir…

I could be mistaken but 1968 Federal mandates brought Vin stampings to the engine blocks. Your best bet might be to look at date codes and compare those codes to the build date for your prospective Cougar GT. I think it’s more a probability than a certainty number matching pre 1968 Cougars. Someone else might be able to answer this more directly. Philip is spot on with his photos but they probably came from his 68 XR7G.

No vin numbers on 67 cars.

Vin numbers were on the cars but not required on major components until 1968. Certain Ford Hi-PO engines pre 1968 have been documented with vin or partial vin #'s.

Looks like I typed quicker than I thought. The vast majority did not have numbers stamped on the trans or block in 1967.

Thanks again everyone. I’m very grateful for all the information and advice.
Cheers!
