I am in the process of installing my restored factory 1967 4 speed shifter and cannot get the lever into the shifter base. The repro shifter trunnions that fit between the lever and the guides in the base protrude too far and will not allow the lever to be inserted and bolted down. I doubt the restorer bent or modified the base and made the opening narrower. Do I need to grind down the trunnions in order get the shifter installed in the base?
Follow up. I was able to find a set of NOS Shifter Trunnions / Springs and now the shift lever is installed and works perfectly. The repro ones are not even close to the right thickness and are junk. I am surprised no one else had run into the same issue.
