67-73 Cougar Sequential Turn Signal Trouble Shooting Thread

Awesome, thanks Vic I’ll give that a try. I did have blinkers like 3-4 months ago all with the same bulbs but they just all of a sudden stopped working. I never had the dash indicators working other than an initial quick flash. When they stopped working that is what steered me to replace the K-5. Here is a pick of the bulbs in the taillights, let me know if it doesn’t work.

Everything sure looks clean but I’ll clean them anyways.

Try cleaning them with alcohol.
The thin film of oil left by contact cleaner causes problems.

Use a test light to check for power on the orange/green, yellow/black, yellow/red, yellow wires:
it should be on solid for the orange/green and flashing on the others.

Yes, that all checked out perfectly. Not sure why if the sequential motor is turning I’m not getting any clicking from the K-5 or K-7?

If that is the case, the 14-wire K8/K9 relay is not distributing the power to the lights.
Check for 12V power on the white wire during left turn and the violet wire during right turn.
Also, check for flashing power on the yellow/black, yellow/red, and yellow wires on that relay.
Also, check it’s ground. It should click loudly when either right or left is selected.

Alright, nothing on the white for left & violet for right. But the common power strip across yellow, green, yellow & yellow/red on that same side all have flashing power. The emergency flasher engaged has only the yellow/red stripe wire flashing, nothing else.

The white and violet wires come from the turn signal switch green/white and white/blue.
Check the connectivity of the turn signal switch according to the table in the turn signal diagnosis guide on my website.

Alright, all rivets check fine and 0.1 resistance between the 2 points.

Here’s a pic:

Check for 12V on both sides of the turn signal switch connector on these wires:
left turn: green/white, white
right turn: white/blue, violet

If you have power on both sides of the turn signal switch connector,
there is a wire break or connector unplugged between the main 14401 harness and the trunk harness.
These two wires are located in the RH tail light 14405 harness that runs under the passenger door sill, under the quarter window, back to the trunk.
This harness then crosses under the rear deck and plugs into the LH tail light harness at the LH wheel well.

Alright, found some bad wires. I will have to repair this connector before I can move on which might actually correct my issues hopefully. I’ll check back in tomorrow & let you know.

I really appreciate all your help today Vic!

So this is going to take a little longer then expected. The first 2 pics are what is currently in place for the column/turn signal switch connector. As you can see, there are some missing wires and pulled out connections. The third pic is of my spare harness & someone made a shortcut between the violet wire and the white w/blue strip wire. According to the schematic these 2 wires are apparently connected down the harness anyway.

Short story long, once I get this all corrected I’ll provide another update.

Hi Vic,
The under dash indicator relay is grounded. I did use 2000 grit emery cloth to clean the contacts. I also replaced the emergency relay in the trunk.
I am still getting the right tail lights flashing when the left turn signal is on. (FYI - the left turn signals are working sequentially). With just the emergency flashers on i get number 1,3,4 & 6 bulbs flashing. I cant figure out what else could be causing these things. Could it be the Sequential Relay?

Thanks

Are the brake lights working correctly?

If the RH section of the Sequential Relay was stuck down in the turn signal mode, it might cause problems but there shouldn’t be any power applied to the RH brake section during LH turn signal operation. You can carefully unbend the crimps, and open it for inspection during operation. It takes a 100W soldering iron to reattach the ground. Burnish the contacts while you are inside the relay.
Otherwise, it suggests that there is still a wiring error, perhaps a modification left over from the previous owner.

Is there 12V on the light blue wire (514) during emergency signal operation? There shouldn’t be.

Hi Vic,

All 6 lights are on when brakes are applied. I checked the voltage on these wires (from trunk harnesses) during emergency signal operation and I have the following. Does anything seem out of normal during emergency signal operation?

Light Blue = 0 volts
Orange/Green = 12 volts
Green/White - fluctuates between 2 - 7 volts
White = 12 Volts
Violet = 12 Volts

Thanks

These signals are normal for the emergency flasher operation. I assume the White/Blue fluctuates also (it’s flashing the RF).
The 14-pin Turn Signal relay is suspect. It should not be passing power to the RH side during LH turn operation.

Good News! All is working now. The sequential lights work great. After carefully inspecting my wiring I basically found that i had the 475 and the 448 wires from the harness side to the P93 connector wired incorrectly. Vic and this community forum was a great help in getting this 1968 Cougar back to the original turn signal/light configuration. Thank You

Vic, so I repaired the steering column/turn signal switch 10 wire connector (harness side). Now everything works perfectly on the right turn signal side front, rear & dash. However when I engage the left turn signal the hazards come on front, rear & dash. When I engage the hazard switch, the front lights work on both sides but only 1 or 2 bulbs barely light in the rear on both sides like there is a wire crossed.

So, I definitely have a wire crossed somewhere and was wondering if you knew what wire #511 on the schematic (see pic below) connects to on the harness side? I used toothpicks to point to the connection in question. I will check on your site to try and match everything.

Success! Using the diagram off of your site, I found that I had a violet wire in the blank spot on the harness side crossed over/connected to the white w/blue stripe again on the harness side. The problem with that is that violet wire, incorrectly in the blank spot, was connecting to the green wire on the column side.

All is good now & everything is working perfectly. Thanks again Vic for your time & effort to help troubleshoot and for having all that info posted on your site!
