I know the restorers use shoe polish to restore the dash pieces, but there has to be dozens of different colors. Which one works the best? My assumption would be dark brown but you know what they say about assuming.
I’ve had a can of Kiwi Brown for a long time. Looks like they now have a Mohogany color that might mean fewer coats for really faded ones. You have to apply it and then let it dry and polish. Keep applying more coats if the part is too light.
That Kiwi Brown polish was probably the first of many things I picked up from reading Royce’s posts. I started using that in 2003 when I got my car.
I ended up using the liquid form of the Kiwi Brown polish, it gave me a deep dark color.
I initially tried the dry polish, but it’s as if I just couldn’t get the color to "stick"to the nonporous material. It would just keep rubbing off.
I let the liquid polish dry then coated it with a wipe-on clear coat called optiseal
Here is how it came out, you be the judge.
Not sure about longevity but so far so good
Amazing. Probably didn’t look that good when it was sitting on the dealership showroom floor 53+ years ago !
It’s really hard to judge such things on a computer monitor, but it looks pretty nice. It’s definitely worth giving it a try.
Yup, can’t hurt. Just make sure to use even strokes vertically in one direction using the foam applicator with a generous amount of polish. This ensures even coverage. Takes a bit to get used to.
I wish they made an exact replica hydrographic film of the wood grain, I would dip the pieces just as I did with my steering wheel.
