New to the forum, new to my 1967 cougar. I’m on my 2nd ASE auto class, but I still have very little practical knowledge when it comes to cars. I took her to a dedicated mustang shop in my city and I was quoted $1200 to replace the brake booster and master cylinder. The last brake booster only lasted a few months because the master cylinder was not replaced when the booster was replaced (so says the mechanic)?
The mechanic initially said the booster would be under $200, but the booster he got was wrong and now the new part is going to be $500? I’m thinking the mechanic is including the core charge for the brake booster?
Anyway, any advice to help me not get fleeced, or give me some knowledge to go in there with would be greatly appreciated! Also, the labor at this place is pretty steep, something like $90/h I think. The inital quote was $118 for the booster, $30 brake fluid, $185 master cylinder, $500 labor. The mechanic is now quoting the booster at $500+.
Go to West Coast Classic Cougars website you can find the cost of the parts you are looking for. $1200.00 seems kind of high to me. You could do this in a weekend by yourself. Key to get to the booster bolts is removing seats.
$1,200 is a little high. Boosters run around $250. And the master cylinder should be anywhere from 65 to 85 dollars. More for a really really good one. Hard to find honest reputable mechanics these days. Good luck with your cougar.
thank you every body for your responses, it helped me feel more confident and knowledgable about the repairs. Still need to check the part #s he gave me and do my homework, so we’ll see. Again, thanks!
Just bolt it on yourself, we have them in stock and have a video that shows you how. If the master cylinder leaked it does in fact ruin the booster in short order.
