When sitting at a traffic light the directional will stop blinking. Seems that the voltage drops. Is there a more powerful alternator that I can upgrade to relatively simply?

The rebuilt units use 60 amp internals but the real problem is the factory voltage regulator. I would start with a new one from NAPA or Echlin that is a solid state unit. It might cure your issue.
Thank you…
[Echlin Voltage Regulator VR 428] is the one I should get?

Right that’s the one.
Changed the voltage regulator today. No change. Directionals still quit when I slow down and stop for a light…
What you describe appears to be a failure in the charging system, as even a well-charged battery should keep voltage up. When at idle, the alternator may not be putting out enough to charge a battery, but the battery should cover all contingencies. Unless…the battery has not been charged enough in the past due to either it going bad or poor charging by the alternator/voltage regulator system. It might be wise to have your whole charging system checked for issues.
I suspect that what you’re describing is the turn signal indicator on the dash that stops blinking. Is that correct?
Yes. That’s the issue…
There is a battery tender on it while stored…
That flasher requires substantial current through the circuit and over time too much series resistance reduces the current pull. If you replace the bulbs you may drop resistance enough to make it work. The sure fire cure is to use an undated electronic flasher. https://secure.cougarpartscatalog.com/store/p/15514-Relay-Turn-Signal-K-7-13A366-Repro-1967-Mercury-Cougar.html?sessionthemeid=26
yep, he should convert to LED bulbs in the cluster, and that updated Cougar’s Unlimited-electronic flasher is awesome! it also functions 100% perfection with my electronic sequential rear signals (also Cougars Unlimited unit) & the WCCC plasma tail light bulbs. i love the old-school ‘click-clack’ sound it puts out. all told, a pretty pricey project but what a difference in safety and looks.
If you dont have the extra cash rn for whole project, at least pick up some matching bulbs on AMZN to update the cluster and definitely buy that electronic signal relay to go with them. NPD has it for a few bucks lower than elsewhere too.
As far as the alternator, I got one rebuilt with upgraded internals (100amp max output vs 55), so looks exactly the same and no wiring changes needed. i just replaced the regulator with a new solid-state unit.
