The nuts that mopauly 1965 posted are not what is used. So, what confuses you about a barrel nut? You know what a barrel looks like? Now just imagine that barrel without a top or bottom and a slit up the side. The barrel nut pushes into the hole in the sheetmetal and then the studs of the emblem slide into the barrel. No wrench or socket will fit on a barrel nut as they are perfectly round.

If you go on the WCCC website and enter barrel nut in the search you will get an idea of what they look like. There are various sizes which is based on the diameter of the stud on the emblem. They are used for various different emblems over the 1967-1973 Cougars. In the past I was able to purchase small packs of them at NAPA.

I saw the listing on wccc but wasn’t clear which ones were used for that particular part. They appear to be slight different ones in the pics.

The design for barrel nuts has changed over the past 50-60 years. Plus there are multiple different manufacturers that each have their own design. The design is not the important part, what is important is that you get the correct size to fit both the hole in the sheetmetal and the diameter of the emblem stud.

This depends on what trim part he is looking for. The 1971 q-panel Cougar script uses barrel nuts like in the picture. But Original ones were steel, not plastic. The 71 trunk script used Dubble sided tape. IIRC the 71 Q-Pannel script uses Barrel nuts, but smaller than the 71 uses.
My error ! I assumed that the 1967 would use the same barrel nut ( acorn style ) that my 1969 has. NOPE. The style was the sleeve ( style ) nut Ford hardware number : 378362-S
