67 Cougar tail lights

Hi all…new owner here…always been my dream car and finally realized. Ok, weird…have brake lights…and tail lights in the first position on the head light switch…but when I pull all the way out for headlights to come in, I lose tail lights… background…purchased this car with the solid state sequential module…I should add that the signals work perfectly. Any thoughts…auto electrics has never been a strong suit…in fact pretty weak.

Welcome. Best group of guys here with lots of knowledge of these cars.

I had the exact same issue with my 69 XR7 and turned out to be a faulty headlight switch. Once replaced, it solved my issue.

Thank you, yeah that’s what my buddy said too. So the fact that is is going through the solid state module has nothing to do with that, right?

Shouldn’t do as it sounds like it is working properly until you use the headlight switch. Headlight swiitches are prone to cause issues when they go bad.

Thank you. Will report back once I get that tested out to maybe help someone else in the future.

. Here she is when I brought her home last weekend.

Welcome! Your car used to belong to the Sheriff of my town. I bought his house and his car! Call me sometime to hear the rest of the story… Here is where you will get the best turn signal help.

I don’t think it’s the same cat Don.
When I sold it to Peter (after buying it from you) it had the wheel opening mouldings and hood trim and new emblems.
The wheels look very similar though.

This one came from Houston via El Paso. Has a 351W with AOD if that helps you in determining that.

Yup, not the same cat. Looks good though.

Nice Cat!
Welcome to the forum!

Hoping you could assist with a sequential turn signal issue.
I recently purchased a 1970 Cougar convertible with sequential turn signals. All of the light are working with the turn signal, but the sequencer is not functioning. The emergency flashers are flashing very quickly, not even enough time to illuminate the bulbs. In the trunk i have a bar with 4 black relays and a solid state sequencer. Under the dash i have located the turn signal flasher on the passenger side (it looks like a standard flasher, round and silver in color). On the drivers side I have the emergency flasher (square and black, mounted on a bracket). How do I troubleshoot to determine what I need to replace?
Thanks

Thanks, sounds like I have the wrong flasher.

Welcome to the Classic Cougar Community. It’s always great to have another new member. Your Cougar looks great.

Okay guys, I replaced switch. Same thing…1 click out…running lights, both front and rear…2 clicks out headlights pop up and on, and tail lights go out… I quoted this to save y’all from having to go back to page 1 with original symptoms. TIA.

Note, one or all of the previous owners was as bad as I am when it comes to auto electronics.

Check all the tail light bulbs one at a time. I had the same issue and one of the taillight bulbs was grounding itself out and causing them all to go out.

Thanks Jetexas, sent PM.
