I’m about to have some vinyl paint mixed up to re-spray the arm rest pad, the radio insert, the dash insert and the crash pad on the steering wheel. What should I match to? Were they originally the same color as the red metal parts of the dash or closer to the red on the seats? Was it a bright red or more of the maroon color?
Also, which headliner came in the 67 standard, the bright red or the maroon? There’s parts of it still hanging from the ceiling, but it’s so faded I can’t tell which one to order.
Luckily for you, you have probably the best possible reference in Cougar 1, since NOS upholstery & other original pieces were used in its restoration. Here are some pics from the website (cougar-1.com):
So 67 standard in red was fairly bright, and everything pretty much matches. Anyway, I’d also suggest matching your paint to whatever you can’t change, like your upholstery (if you have new seat covers already). That or find an area that didn’t get exposed to the sun.
Be glad you don’t have “parchment” as that’s a bit of a struggle. I ended up settling on seatcovers that are more white than original, and will have to paint everything else to match.
I haven’t ordered seats yet, so I think I’ll just give the glove box door a polish and then take that with me to the paint store. It also looks like I should go with the darker headliner and paint the headliner windlace to match that.
1967 was the only year to get the bright red. 1968 and later used the dark red or maroon color, which is about the same color as the inserts on the door panels. Bright red parts are hard to find for sure!
I was planning to switch over to a set of 68 panels (at top in photo), which are in better overall condition, but the arm rest holes don’t line up. Can anyone verify for me that the lower panel is indeed a 68 panel, and if so, did the 68 have a different armrest?
The rear hole is in the same position, but I’m going to have to cut a new hole for the forward arm rest bolt if I put these on the car.
The top right screw hole is also in a different spot, which means drilling a new hole in the 67 door.
Just wanted to verify that these were indeed 68 panels and that they would work before I start modifying things.
The upper panel is a 68 decor panel and the lower panel is a 67 standard panel. You can tell quickly by the length of the basket weave piece. The 67 panel has the longer piece of basket weave. The 68 decor panel uses the same armrest as a 68 standard panel. The 67 standard armrest is different than the 68 armrest. Yes, the basket weave piece should be red, not brown.
