So, after a while of trying to get the right rotors for my 70 I found out that the previous owner changed the setup to 67 front disc. I just got new 67 front rotors, and they look exactly like the old rusted ones that were on before, same markings and style and every little detail, except a some point between those being put on and me ordering the new ones, they must have changed the race size.
The bearings fit perfectly on the old rusted rotors and they sit just barely too far out on the new rotor, enough that I can’t get the cotter pin through, so I was wondering which bearings I should get to fit the races in the Summit 67 Cougar rotors (SUM-BR-61053). It says the Timken SET2 and SET6 are the ones to get, and they come with races so even if they don’t fit the races in the rotors already I’ll be able to put the new ones in, but I was just wondering if anyone had experience with this and had bearings that would for sure fit the races I that are already in my rotors, Thanks.
I purchased a new set of rotors which the races weren’t pressed all the way to the stop. It created the same issue you’re having. I would also consider going to a local parts store and comparing what you purchased from Summit with their offering.
Are you re-using the old bearings? If you have new bearings, compare the numbers on the bearings/races with the old set. You can research these bearing numbers through Timken (or whatever brand they are) to make sure you have the correct race for the bearing.
I hope you were able to get your bearings sorted out. We often get unwanted surprises when we order new parts for an assembly and then we have to find other parts that fit.
Yes I was able to get it sorted out. I did reuse the old bearings and took note of the numbers on them and on the races. I ended up knocking the races out of the old rusted rotors and getting them in the new rotors, I read a lot about freezing the races and heating up the rotors to help with fitting but they fit in perfectly with some tapping and time.
Many / most of the drum to disc conversion kits use 1967 styled components because the '67 stuff was designed to bolt to the same drum brake spindle. You will need wheel bearings for the car’s original application which is 1970 with drum brakes.
