68 390 drive shaft restoration.

Dose any one have a copy of a build sheet for a 68 390 automatic or Hertz g that they can post? I need to know what color the paint strips on the driveshaft should be. The car is missing the drive shaft, and I have acquired one from a local cougar guy. I plan on restoring the driveshaft for the hertz g car. The stripes on the replacement drive shaft are white or light blue then blue and green .This is from front to back. Just need to know if these colors are correct or should they be a different set of colors.

Thanks Scott

I got a complete C6 set up from wccc a few years ago including the drive shaft I’ll see if it’s got paint marks left on it.

F-r light blue , dark blue green.

Thanks for The information.

This is what I originally copied from my driveshaft on my XR7 G 390 C6. All my paint marks were visible.

Thanks for the reply’s. I looks like their are two different answers. May be some one else with a 390 hertz g can take a picture of that drive shaft or post a copy of the build sheet on there hertz car.

Thanks Scott

My approach on a restoration is if it’s available. Copy what is on your car and recreate it. If you can’t do that then go by what the popular vote that says what is correct.

The Hertz XR7-G’s with 390 / C6 had the identical codes front to rear - Light Blue, Dark Blue, Green. A yellow stripe is at one end to differentiate front and rear. A letter is scrawled about in the center of the driveshaft representing the last letter of the part number. These same codes were also used for the 427 and 428 cars in 1968 if equipped with the C6. Many other details of colors and machining were present on the universal joints. I tried to show all of it here:

I suspect Brian may have found faded versions of these colors, so he duplicated those. The real stripes are very sloppy, applied with some sort of brush or swab as the driveshaft was turned in a fixture.

I have a different driveshaft then your 428CJ. Different dia and it doesn’t neck down. That’s why I didn’t follow up on your build post when you were looking for the stripe colors.

The driveshaft being made differently is a running change, around April 1968. Maybe due to the new 428 CJ? It’s still the same part number as yours. It still used the same stripes / colors as the earlier style on your car. In fact the same color codes were still being used in 1969.
