I have a 68 XR7 S code 390 cougar. At some point in its life the
390 was replaced with a 289 automatic.
I have a 390 that is in the process of being rebuilt. I
am going to to covert the car to 4 speed. I just purchased
the top loader transmission, console, and shifter.
Has any one done this conversion. Need to get the rest of the
parts.
Specific to a '68 390? I’m not sure. However, there are several good write ups here on this site on auto to manual conversions in general.
Thank you
Be sure to get 390 parts for the clutch linkage as it is different from the 289 302.
If you decide not to go with the original “Z” bar system for the clutch operation because of difficulty finding parts and expense, and you don’t car about being stock original parts, I would highly suggest going with a cable clutch. There’s a great system designed for use in Mustang and Cougars. There is also a hydraulic system.
NPD should have every piece of the linkage you need to covert over to stick shift.
I have started to look at the different clutch systems.
I am in the process of putting a new brake booster and was not sure if I need to put any of the 4 speed parts in while I have access to the firewall. Will drrive the 289 this summer
and hope to start the conversion to the 390, 4 speed late
